Looks like we are preparing a second bid for Emile Smith-Rowe, I really can't see this one happening. We took their main summer target, if we were to take one of their rising stars, whom is already a regular part of their first team it would be their owners openly admitting they are happy for the club to continue their decline.

The fact we have bid and are planning a second bid tells me the players agent had suggested there is interest and therefore reason to do so. This could either be genuine, or the agent looking to show Arsenal there's genuine interest elsewhere so they can get a better deal.

Either way I hope we don't waste too much time on this, we should always strive to get the best deal but there's a fine line between the benefit of getting the best deal and wasting time and missing out on other targets.

Exciting times to be a Villa fan!

It might depend on the money situation at Arsenal. If they want players like Aouar, and Ben White for instance, they might be more tempted to offload Smith- Rowe to help fund those deals. It would be great if we could get him but Alvarez is probably more realistic. A front 4 of Grealish, Buendia, Alvarez and Watkins would be as equally mouth watering.

2.) 23 Jun 2021 06:03:17
Mouth watering agreed, but we would need two very effective midfielders behind them to avoid being overrun. I don’t think we have that pair at the moment.

One of the reasons why Grealish was switched to the left from no. 10 role was due to the flimsy midfield we had as a result. Add to which, he rarely runs on beyond the centre forward without the ball. Buendia is not too dissimilar, although tends to thread the ball through or work on sharp one-twos with the front man.

3.) 23 Jun 2021 08:08:11
I think it would be Smith Rowe, or Alvarez, rather than both. If we signed both all of a sudden we have Grealish, Buendia, ESR and Alvarez all fighting for the positions behind Watkins. Grealish is more or less guaranteed to start, with the other three fighting for the other two spots, I can’t see any of them signing on the basis there a good chance they’ll be spending a portion of the season on the bench.

Add into that Traore, El Ghazi and Chukky, and we’ve got far too many players for those positions😂 I think Trez will be sold once fully fit.

Personally, I’d sooner see us focus on a defensive midfielder to play behind these lads, protect the back four and allow the other to do whatever they want.

4.) 23 Jun 2021 09:50:14
I think sadly that the ESR business is all designed to secure him a better deal at Arsenal, I think other players such as Willock, Guendouzi, Elneny and Maitland Niles are the ones likely to be sacrificed to secure additional funds.

Whilst it is good to be linked with all these progressive attacking players I would like to see us associated with that beast of a defensive midfielder that I think will really take us to the next level. I know there are noises around Berge but they don’t sound that likely if I am honest so I would like our next move to be in that space to be honest.

5.) 23 Jun 2021 11:00:36
Talking of defensive midfielders, Romeu of Southampton is the latest player that we’ve apparently registered an interest in. Any thoughts on this one guys?

6.) 23 Jun 2021 12:26:06
On the face of it, his age goes against the policy at the minute, but with us losing our 3 oldest players, some experience in the actual starting X11 and not the bench (Young) might be what we need.

7.) 23 Jun 2021 15:20:50
I was banging on about Romeu a few months back. one of the best defensive midfielders in the league in my opinion. strong, aggressive and technically sound. might be getting on a bit but if we can get him for a decent price he'd definitely be worth it. Straight into our first 11 and will help us bridge the gap to the teams above us.

15 Jun 2021 21:27:38
Looks like we're interested in Ashley Young on a free. Seems a no brainer to me, lost 3 experienced players this summer so bringing someone in who has been at the highest level, won almost all there is to win at club level, knows what it takes to make the step up and knows the club, can only be a positive. Plus despite his age, proved last season he still has the ability to provide adequate cover for a number of positions.

chrisAVFC

1.) 15 Jun 2021 22:56:25
Hard to believe he’s 35, great player for us in the past. if he’s still got the legs I’d have him.

2.) 16 Jun 2021 07:35:21
Played 34 times in a title winning season last year so you’d imagine he’s still got enough in the tank!

Not the sort of signing that gets everyone excited but could be shrewd bit of business. Barry to Everton, Milner to Liverpool type signing!

3.) 16 Jun 2021 14:29:02
Not for me. Having him back at his age just doesn’t seem to meet our owners requirements.

4.) 16 Jun 2021 17:09:17
It would be great to have Ashley back at the club. Apart from being an asset on the pitch and a very capable replacement for Matt Targett, I think he could have a big influence on our younger players. We are lacking players with his level of experience, and that in itself would be invaluable.

5.) 16 Jun 2021 17:35:29
My thoughts exactly Mark.

6.) 16 Jun 2021 22:56:16
Think he’d be a brilliant addition. Get him involved in some coaching, can cover both fullback positions, and even play further forward. He’s a great athlete, and has a winning mentality. Also, takes a wicked set piece. Bring him home!

7.) 21 Jun 2021 20:28:09
Wasn’t sure on this one and wondered if Ashley was using his surname as camouflage. However, on reflection, maybe a short term arrangement isn’t a bad shout, given his versatility. He might even see a fair bit of game time across various flank roles.

Another wise old head will be useful too.

28 May 2021 08:07:16
AVFC want 2 or 3 additions in the window, Buendia is an option, McNeil being looked at. City like Grealish but Villa are relaxed about the situation. - Gregg Evans for The Athletic.

Gregg has a hit and miss history, Buendia would be great, McNeil has more game time than Traore but less Goals and Assists, surely we want more if we are buying someone for the first team? I hope all targets are of this standard though, it's what we need. Any talk of 5/ 6 players was ridiculous, no mention of a defensive midfielder yet, which is worrying as most see it as our priority position, alongside a 10.

Owners will want silly money for Grealish, only probably 3 clubs in this league will pay, can't see it happening myself but Pep does say that to get continued success you have to change players and shake it up every season, so who knows.

chrisAVFC

1.) 28 May 2021 13:05:56
We have owners who are interested in the club winning things so I don’t believe large offers for Grealish will faze them at all!

2.) 28 May 2021 18:09:06
I don’t think it will be down to the owners I think Jack will determine what Jack wants to do, hopefully that will be staying with us, but linking up with England and rubbing shoulders with the City players may influence his view and he may look to follow Harry Kane and leave his boyhood club.

3.) 28 May 2021 19:26:09
If you’re right John, the best way to sway Jack to stay would be to bring in 2 or 3 quality players ASAP.
If he could see a squad of players capable of pushing for the European places next season, I think he would want to be a part of that.

4.) 28 May 2021 19:54:04
I agree with the Grealish situation. IF Citeh come in with a very large bid and he is starstruck, it could happen.

McNeil’s stats look average, but he is in a low scoring side. I think he would contrast well with Buendia.

I see Monchengladbach are interesting in Rashica. Personally, I would rather pass on him (yes, I did mean pass) after last season’s fiasco. I know he would be cheap, but….

5.) 29 May 2021 17:10:58
I think 3 or 4 players is max we will see. Problem is for that though is that we will be waiting for a while and start to panic. Need a LB to cover Targett/ push him. I think now that trez is out we need another winger or 2 depending if we keep Jack (I think we will) and put him CAM like Dean has been.

So most likely I see 2 wingers, LB and a CAM coming in.

Tammy is vey unlikely, and will only be bought if we put jack at 10 imo.

23 Feb 2021 14:31:29
Sander Berge being linked, would be perfect and hopefully at a good price if they go down.

chrisAVFC

1.) 23 Feb 2021 14:59:08
Would be a good signing if true Chris, he is a big lad as well.

{Ed077's Note - Isn't he out with a long term injury currently?

2.) 23 Feb 2021 15:08:10
Ed077 yes he is but Utd are expecting him back before the end of the season Wilder has said he knows Berge is using Utd as a stepping stone to bigger and better things however I think from the interview he gave they are expecting interest from clubs involved in Europe rather than teams like us,

{Ed077's Note - that's sensible point of view from Sheffield United and Wilder.

3.) 23 Feb 2021 15:10:38
Yes Ed, don`t think he will feature again this season, hamstring problem I think.

{Ed077's Note - Might not be fully fit and firing even if he gets back before this season's end}

4.) 23 Feb 2021 15:23:52
I agree it’s a sensible point of view, but also a dangerous one. I remember us signing Gueye and him mentioning something about bigger things in his first interview, we got relegated and he was sold.

I admit I didn’t know Berge was injured, he’s a brilliant player though and could be that anchor man we’ve been missing for so long.

{Ed077's Note - It largely comes down to the players mentality. Its better for players to want to do so well that the better team come after them than it is to have players who are just happy to be there and not strive to improve IMO.

Although it might pain but Gueye did do well enough to earn a move to Everton and then to PSG.}

5.) 23 Feb 2021 16:06:00
Don’t get me wrong Ed Gueye was phenomenal, in an awful team for us. But looking back after the comments he made and then the stats he picked up, was he playing within himself, playing safe in order to get that move should the worse happen.

{Ed077's Note - That is one way of looking at it but he wasnt useless like you pointed out. If I remember correctly he was one of your better performers during that season which wasnt the biggest achievement but still not too bad.

6.) 23 Feb 2021 16:43:53
It was obvious to most Villa fans that both Gueye and Veretout were excellent players, and they’ve gone on to have successful careers at PSG and Roma. Unfortunately they were largely surrounded by mediocrity when they were with us, and we were unable to match their ambitions. Neither would be out of place in the current squad though, and I would be more than happy if we could bring a few more of their calibre and ambition in this Summer.

{Ed077's Note - Well said mark.

7.) 23 Feb 2021 17:04:38
Are you our new Ed? if so welcome on board mate.

{Ed077's Note - I am the editor of the masses mark. But I am not a Villa supporter if you meant in that way:-P

8.) 23 Feb 2021 17:16:28
Ok, my apologies, it’s just that Ed001 made reference to a new Ed this morning. Perhaps we can work on you becoming a Villa supporter 😁.

{Ed077's Note - Unlikely nay Impossible mate. But appreciate the thought. And no need to apologise mark

9.) 23 Feb 2021 19:46:47
Veretout was my favourite of the bunch to be honest, just never ever played in the right position. When you look back we had 5 or 6 players good enough to keep us in the league. Gueye, Veretout, Amavi, Traore, Ayew, Grealish (albeit young), problem was 5 of those had been signed that summer, the turn around was way too much and it didn’t really matter who we brought in, too much change and no cohesion meant we were doomed from the start.

{Ed077's Note - off the top of my head didn't you have Richards and past it Lescott as the CB pairing though? Might explain how you went down no!}

10.) 23 Feb 2021 20:16:11
Certainly didn’t help Ed, nor did the atmosphere in the dressing room or the decisions in the boardroom ie how we got shut of a manager who a few months earlier had taken us a very average team at best to an FA cup final and replaced him with the wrong man at the wrong time, come to think of it I am not sure Remi Garde would ever have been the right man at any time. In fact does anyone know where Remi is now?

{Ed077's Note - Remi has been out of job since getting sacked by Montreal Impact in 2019}

11.) 23 Feb 2021 20:15:25
2 questions about this rumour
1 can he do the skirting boards in the players lounge? (sorry wrong kind of sander😳)
2 is he any relation to the bloke who sang "Lady in red"?
Seriously though, decent player and physical presence 👍.

12.) 23 Feb 2021 20:36:56
Gone from strength to strength then I see.

13.) 23 Feb 2021 20:36:56
Yes Ed, we had Lescott who quite literally didn’t care and Micah Richards who refused to accept he’s a right back! Wasn’t the best base to build from!

Garde has to go down as one of the worst premier league managers of the last decade🙈.

20 Feb 2021 12:48:38
Rumours picking up pace that Grealish has got his shin injury again and looking like 4 weeks out.

I'm a bit Dubois because the main sources for this are him not being in the training pictures, and a fantasy premier league Twitter account discussing it.

A friend has forwarded a message of Grealish' "cousin" which says it's his shin again, but the text is flakey at best and my friend is a bluenose, so I'm very sceptical to be honest.

Fingers crossed it's them down the road trying to lighten up their season.

chrisAVFC

1.) 20 Feb 2021 14:27:11
I hope not chris, I have been trying to find out myself, there are a few snippets scattered about, but nothing definite.
There is an interview on AVFC with Michelle Owen, it is noted as being a day ago, but no indication from him that he is carrying any sort of injury.
So fingers crossed mate, he would be a big miss, compounded by Matty.

2.) 20 Feb 2021 15:24:11
Sam Dave, I’ve had a look and can’t find anything, other than he isn’t in the training pictures released.

All quiet on the transfer front, under this new ownership that has meant we are not far away from a deal in the past, hopefully that's the case now!

If Buendia was for the right wing then we need a number 10, if he was for the Number 10 then we need another winger.

Pretty sure Jack is due back next Monday, will be interesting to see how that plays out!

chrisAVFC

1.) 20 Jul 2021 21:10:08
Think we will see one more first teamer arrive, that'll be a CMF or 10 - Then we will see a GK and CB to add to the squad, beyond that can't see much more coming in Chris unless. He leaves, then we could see quite a few more as Jack will need replacing in the aggregate over 2 or 3 players I feel.

Anybody any suggestions as to who the CMF will be? We must have 30M+ earmarked for that position if the ESR bids are accurate.

20 Jul 2021 10:31:57
Friendly tomorrow, hope we get to see Chukwuemeka get serious game time in this preseason.

chrisAVFC

1.) 20 Jul 2021 11:12:03
You going chris have you had your tickets yet if so.

2.) 20 Jul 2021 11:57:48
No mate not going.

18 Jul 2021 10:39:35
So rumours are the lack of pursuit for a number 6/ defensive mid is due to Nakamba being noted for a much bigger role next season.

I've been a critic at times and full of praise for him at times. His ability on the ball leaves a bit to be desired at times, and some of the stuff he does it certainly unorthodox, however when I look back I've probably only seen him have one bad game. So he's definitely worth his chance, get a ball player next to him (for me Dougie is perfect for that) and I think that could be the winning formula!

chrisAVFC

1.) 18 Jul 2021 11:27:00
I agree Chris I think he just needs regular game time, to be fair to him he’s played well most times he’s got a chance and he’s a very humble guy there’s no bad attitude when he’s not playing, if every bit part player we had performed as well as he did we would have great depth in our squad. like you say he needs a ball player close to him that can spray the long passes and he will do the dogs work protecting the back 4.

2.) 18 Jul 2021 13:22:55
I agree guys, he deserves his chance. With plenty of games under his belt, he’s capable of owning that DM role, and frankly I think the owners would have to shell out a lot of money to bring in an upgrade on Marvelous. The question might be, who do we play if he’s injured and I mentioned in a previous post, if we brought Axel in, I think he might be able to fill that role, as well as covering for the central defensive positions.

3.) 18 Jul 2021 14:13:51
Sorry guys to disagree, but I just don’t think Nakamba is either good enough when it comes to distribution or is consistent enough in terms of performance. I agree he does some good things but then undoes all the good work through a misplaced pass or an badly timed tackle around our box if you do that repeatedly you are going to get punished at this level. He reminds me as the midfield equivalent of Engels occasional good games but there is always a lapse in concentration around the corner. I think we definitely need an upgrade.

4.) 18 Jul 2021 14:50:25
I am with Mark and Chris on this one.
When Mark suggested Axle, I mentioned Young, and of coarse we do have Dougie, who I unfortunately am not keen on, so I do think we do have a solution there somewhere.
I will say this, I do think if our coaches spent some time with Nakamba I am sure they could improve his vision and distribution, and give him a left foot.
I do like the guy very much guys.

5.) 18 Jul 2021 16:15:01
Where do we see Sanson fitting into this, maybe competition for McGinn further forward?

6.) 18 Jul 2021 17:21:35
Sanson is capable of playing anywhere in midfield Chris, including defensive midfield. I wouldn’t be surprised to see him slot in somewhere. There’s going to be plenty of competition for places, especially with the ascension of Ramsey and Chukwuemeka in there too.

7.) 18 Jul 2021 17:36:10
He’s got a lot to prove to get a start in our midfield in my book, I see him as depth on the bench at best, maybe we haven’t seen the best of him yet but as it stands for me he’s in the category of “not a bad player to bring on if needed” even at that it’s more in a situation where we are in a winning position and not looking to score goals to get back in a game, I don’t see him as a game changer.

8.) 18 Jul 2021 17:39:47
Not sure Chris, I am miffed to be honest.
Now he has had time to settle, he may have come to terms with how we do things at B6, at least that`s what I am hoping.
There is a player in there somewhere, is he for us, time will tell.

13 Jul 2021 12:39:44
Tyrone Mings, what a man. Honour to have him at our club and exactly the type of character we want.

I've been saying it for some time, now this tournament has shown it to the world.

chrisAVFC

1.) 13 Jul 2021 14:05:01
Couldn't agree more.
If Tyrone and Rashford ever stand for Parliament they will have my vote, much better than Priti Patel.

2.) 13 Jul 2021 15:11:06
Tyrone is a very astute and intelligent man, and what I will say is I have only ever heard common sense when listening to him.

3.) 13 Jul 2021 16:20:33
This shows on the pitch Dave, the biggest bloke there yet always the one calming players down when it’s getting heated.

4.) 13 Jul 2021 17:34:07
I admire very much what Tyrone has had to say, I only hope that the FA don’t hold it against him, as based on past experience they tend to take a dim view of people speaking there mind a la Brian Clough. I know Rashford has dabbled in politics but that was a general criticism of government policy not of an individual minister it will be interesting to see how his England career develops or otherwise from here.

5.) 13 Jul 2021 19:01:31
As a Wolves fan I have to say how proud I am for West Midlands football that Tyrone Mings has spoken for all of us in the most powerful and expressive way possible.
A top bloke and a fine player. Hope he has a great season 👍.

6.) 13 Jul 2021 21:09:18
Cheers SaN, well said mate, same goes for your boys as well.
That glass your holding looks inviting, is it a drop of Bank`s Bitter.

7.) 13 Jul 2021 22:15:44
Pre-C.V. Bank Holiday at the Distillery, Dave, so likely to have been a lager (always preferred Bank’s mild to bitter anyway) .
Great story about JG giving his boots to a young lad after the game on Sunday as well. The team may have fallen short in the Final but the attitude and dignity of those guys in defeat has made them real winners in my book.

8.) 13 Jul 2021 23:16:05
Yeah Jack is a decent bloke, and a very nice touch from him.
Bitter, Mild, Lager, shorts they are all good SaN.
Stay safe mate.

12 Jul 2021 11:10:24
I really can't understand the love in for Southgate, he understands tournament football but his game management, tactics and team selections are horrendous.

Mason Mount didn't effect a single game, our best performance was against Germany, one he wasn't involved in, yet he gets picked every game there after, has absolutely no effect on the game and is left on far far too long.

Kalvin Phillips, run around as much as you want, but at some point you have to get your head up and play the ball forward. It was like he thought only Stones, Maguire and Pickford were playing at times. Last night Rice was twice the player he was, yet it's Rice who gets hooked?

Then to find out today Southgate picked the penalty takers, whether they put their hand up or not. Sterling and Grealish both wanted to take one and had been told no. Never heard anything like it, the bloke is a fraud, we will never get another opportunity like this. One nil up and his first thought is to defend the lead for 80+ minutes and offer nothing going forward.

The slimming world Steve Bruce has to go!

chrisAVFC

1.) 12 Jul 2021 12:52:29
Ain’t going to happen Chris, the FA have offered him a contract extension.

2.) 12 Jul 2021 13:16:40
Have to disagree here Chris I thought Phillips was our best player in the tournament Leeds have got one serious player on their hands I think Southgate is just a yes man no balls at all bottled it big time.

3.) 12 Jul 2021 13:18:15
Chris the points you mention, are the very points my family and I have been talking about last night and again this morning.
Absolutely bonkers, I can`t get my head round it, we can see it, so he must have s##t in his eye.
Penalties were taken by two players who were stone cold, and the the pressure of the last pen, taken by a 19 year old,
Also can someone tell me why players insist on doing the "fandango" before hitting the ball.

4.) 12 Jul 2021 14:01:55
Every pub I’ve been in watching the games Dave, everyone is saying these things! It’s ridiculous how the vast majority can see things but the manager can’t.

As for Phillips Daz, I think he’s lively but at the top level you need more than that, all the top number sixes like verrati do what he does, whilst still making their team tick, picking passes going forward that open doors. Phillips lacks that, Rice and Henderson as a two are much stronger than Phillips and Rice.

If I’m being honest I’d be underwhelmed if we did sign him. I trust our recruitment and management team, their record speaks for itself. 90% of transfers in recent years have been successes to varying levels, but I’ve never watched Cantwell and thought he was a player ready to go up a level, he gets over hyped because he’s English, I’m guessing but I’m sure El Ghazis last season trumps Cantwells in his prem season.

He’s good enough for a back up, you aren’t going to have a phenomenal keeper knowing they won’t play. Go back to the home game against baggies in the play offs, watch the saves he had to make. The one from Rodriguez is one of the best I’ve seen live.

Really a back up keeper is not where we should be focusing our attention.

Did a phenomenal job getting us promoted tbh, won us the home game against Baggies and different class in the shootout.

Time will tell, I wouldn’t stress over it however, you’d have thought we’d be used to this by now, he’s been sold to a top 4 team the previous three summers according to the same papers and sources your seeing these reports from now.
