Just read Dean's exit statement. This has hurt the big man.
I feel for him, genuinely gutted for him.
Was it too soon to make the decision?
If the owners had to do it I think it had to be now. Otherwise they would surely had to stick with him until the end of the season or not far off it.
Personally I think he probably wouldn't have taken us to the next level.
Friday night's performance and the substitutions had an air of Lambert's management about it towards the end. Worryingly so in fact.
To pin your managerial future by throwing Davies on is surely a desperate sign.
We have spent a lot of money and if the owners are to sanction more investment in January and next summer they're probably concerned with providing the same manager with those funds.
I do feel that whoever comes in will only get one big injection of funds. I wouldn't blame the owners if that was it if it doesn't work out.
I hope I'm wrong but this season could be a catalyst for some bigger changes ahead.

I still maintain there is a link between Shakespeare joining and our poor form.
He joined in August 2020. 3 or 4 months to get settled in then since Jan 2021 we have lost 2 coaching staff and have hit the worst form of any Premier league team over 2021.
His behaviour at Leicester was also questionable.
I assume we all want Dean to succeed and most, if not all, are frustrated/disappointed with current performances and results.
The answer seems obvious to me. Sack Shakespeare. To me he is a destabilising influence.

He'll be going along with Smith, it's inevitable now I think.

2.) 07 Nov 2021 00:35:44
I thought Shakespeare’s take on footie was :
Am I so round with you as you with me,
That like a football you do spurn me thus?
You spurn me hence, and he will spurn me hither.
If I last in this service, you must case me in leather.’ (Act 2, Scene 1 Comedy Of Errors). Am I thinking of a different Shakespeare by any chance ?

Trinity i asked the very same queation last week. I don't think its a coincidence

It's interesting that since a certain person has joined the club several Hingis have happened.
John Terry has left.
Richard O'Kelly has left.
Our performances have fallen off o cliff.
And there appears to be disharmony within the club.
Tha certain person Inrefer to is Craig Shakespeare.
A coincidence?
Don't believe in them.
Didn't like him as a player. Didn't like him as No.2 at Leicester
And wasn't happy when he joined our club.
If anyone should leave VP, it should be him.

Hi Trinity, it is a little like when Leicester won the title and the following season started badly and Ranieri got the sack.
I remember the smug look on shakespeares face, I think he perhaps didn't help Ranieri and now wants the top job at VP

Spurs sack Nuno!
Right now would we swap our position with Spurs?
You'd have to say probably. Yet Spurs have decided that their season is not going in the right direction. 8th! And their season is not going in the right direction?
I know there are other factors, Kane being the main issue there.
But, to sack a manager after only 4 months and the team in 8th, which is about as good as they are to be fair, is a big decision.
Where does that leave Villa? We're 15th and heading in the wrong direction yet we're prepared, for now at least, to stick with Dean Smith.
I have to say the sacking of Nuno is not a good sign for Smith. It must surely put pressure on the owners when they probably don't want or need it.
An interesting few weeks ahead I think.

Spurs are undoubting shopping in a different market to Villa, that's the sad reality, but for them to go out and get Conte (one of the best managers in the world) is a real statement of intent. If we get rid of Smith, we need a similar statement, it doesn't necessarily need to be a world class manager but somebody with fresh ideas that we can build the future of the club around - I've said it before I don't subscribe to the "who can we get that is better" stance from some Villa fans. Sometimes different equals better and this is a team that is crying out for a different voice based on yesterday's performance. If Smith does go I'd be amazed if the role is given to the Dyches or Lampards of the world, our owners will think bigger, I'm confident in that.

2.) 01 Nov 2021 18:10:50
Agree completely that signing Conte is a statement but the fact that their board don’t see the football Spurs are playing is good enough and the fact they’re not satisfied with being 8th at this stage of the season is very interesting. I think some of the players have got Nuno the sack. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if discussion were held with their main assets along he lines of “if he stays I’m off” or “get him in and I’ll stay”.
Think you get where I’m going with that line of thinking.

3.) 01 Nov 2021 18:42:07
Im sure those conversations are happening at Spurs and based on some of the recent reactions by our players, at Villa as well mate. Southampton will tell us everything we need to know I think, another under cooked performance lacking intensity and I think we can safely assume Smith has lost the dressing room. My biggest issue with Smith has always been his lack of flexibility and game management but the players always looked like they bought into him and his approach, I haven't seen that over the past month and that's incredibly worrying as once you lose the dressing room the writing is on the wall. Fingers crossed we get a reaction at the weekend, Ramsey injury is unfortunate but what an opportunity for Chukwumeka (or Sanson if fit) .

4.) 01 Nov 2021 22:35:24
I’m not sure they’ll get Conte. He’ll be looking for a very significant investment in players as well as a big package for himself. Levy probably won’t give him either IMO.

5.) 01 Nov 2021 22:53:46
Spurs in eighth and just two points off Man Utd in fifth. Fans don’t like ‘Nuno Football’ . Tottenham board knew exactly what they were getting when he was appointed. Spurs have supposedly been punching below their weight for years. A Plethora of management changes hasn’t improved anything. Perhaps, despite their marquee stadium and self-appreciation, they’re not that great after all. But I’m sure Levy knows what he’s doing ? ?

The morning after the night before.
A few people on this site and others, are calling for Smith's head, maybe more than a few now to be fair. I understand the feelings and honestly share their concerns.
I am trying to be level headed with our current situation.
Is it a blip? Has this been coming for a while? Are we in a relegation battle now? If we win the next 2 we will be upper mid table, is that good enough?
I'm thinking, if it were my money how quickly would I expect relative success? 3 years, 4, 5?
Our 5 year plan had to be a Premier league club that by the end of the 5 years was doing more than just survive. A club that was pushing for a top half finish.
Have we become greedy, wanting success, measured by a top 6 place?
We need to be realistic about our place.
My question is, if it were my money, would I be looking to pull the trigger on Smith's tenure? Honestly, I don't know.
One thing is for sure we need to get behind the team and manager for the next 3 games at least. By then we will have more certainty where our season is heading.
I am going to support my club, the players and the manager and do my bit to try and get us where we all surely want to be.
UTV.

My biggest frustration Trinity is we seem to be forcing square pegs into round holes from a squad perspective and this is killing us.

I'm sure most people (regardless of club alligences) would admit that this is a very strong Aston Villa squad but Smith's persistence in crowbarring them into the starting 11 at the expense of balance is mind boggling - This for me is the way forward.

Martinez

Cash, Konsa, Mings, Targett

McGinn, Luiz, Sanson

Buendia, Watkins, Bailey

And then look at the options we have off the bench:

Steer

XXXXX, Tuanzebe, Hause, Young

Ramsey, Marvelous, Chukwumeka

Traore, Ings, El Ghazi

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to see progress on last season's 11th place finish, there is some very good squad depth there, the system or the inflexibility in system is what's hurting us - Smith has some massive decisions to make otherwise I genuinely fear for his position.

2.) 23 Oct 2021 14:37:12
Trinity excellent post. I have always refrained from the sack Smith rhetoric but even I am wondering if he's really up to it. We have become too predictable and are missing a lot 8n midfield. I know ill get battered for this but for me Luiz and mcginn are so far off it they're embarrassing. I know people on here have called for an enforcer, which I do not disagree with, however he won't do three peoples jobs. Luiz does nothing for me and mcginn runs about a lot but produces very little. They are never in acres of space a dictating the game, they are always next to their opponent doing little battles, and losing them. Ollie needs dropping, he's also well off it, as Harry Rednapp said my missus could have scored that on the miss at the end. Ill always back the boys but will also have my say if things aren't right. UTV.

3.) 23 Oct 2021 15:21:24
BK, absolutely nothing wrong wanting progression, in fact it’s what every fan of every club wants. I guess my point is progress is measured differently by every single one of us.
Finishing 10th could be seen as progress but if it was by scoring fewer points and winning fewer games would that mean progress?
Ultimately finishing in the top 6 then four and maintaining that level for several years has to be the aim. But how long does it take and are we prepared for some downs along the way?

4.) 23 Oct 2021 16:13:21
I think Europe has to be the aim by the end of next season - Losing Grealish has derailed any genuine chance of Europe this season IMO but the bare minimum with this squad has to be a top 10 finish Trinity. Agree that some fans measure progress differently so I can only speak for myself, if you offered me 10th and a genuine FA Cup challenge now I'd take it, but I wouldn't accept the next season given what will most likely be another summer of investment from our owners.

Chris, you’re spot on. A signing like they use to be. No leak, no fuss, just done. Great to see Sky and Talksport taken completely by surprise.
£30m? A bit steep or about right?

That is one out of nowhere. No rumours, no pundit quoting “I’ve heard”, no “in the know”. Just straight in. Like a deadline day signing weeks before the deadline. Great signing.

Had to read your post several times Chris. You’re normally very measured with your posts. Very unlike you fella. At least your follow up posts were more the old Chris.

Well Chris, he’s on the bench tonight I’m pleased to say but behind Nakamba who starts in place of suspended McGinn. When you have Sanson coming in it suddenly looks a bit busy in there doesn’t it.

Not at all Frenchy. I take the point.
As I say, I like the kid but how much game time is he going to get with us this year?
I honestly don’ think he’ll be on the bench ahead of any 2 of Trezeguet or Traore or ElGhazi or Barkley,
Keeping him is fine with me. As previously mentioned, it was a question?
Assume of the 5 positions we have Grealish, Barkley, El Ghazi, McGinn and Luiz starting that leaves 3 places on bench for cam/ am, Sanson, Trezeguet, Traore and Nakamba?
Assume all fit, where does Ramsey fit into that mix?

Konsa, Mings and Tuanzebe looked terrible in the 1st half.
2nd half was better but it couldn’t have been much worse.
Watkins is definitely out of sorts. My recent posts have highlighted his poor form and body language. What on earth was he doing in the first couple of minutes? Set the tone for him for the rest of the game I’m afraid.
You’re correct Chris and as I said earlier, next weeks game is massive.
Come on boys.

It’s clear Villa4eva that you are a little vexed by today’s result looking at the number of posts and also the variability of them also. I can assure you I share your frustration at today’s result and avoided kicking the cat into next week by the barest of margins (heard that somewhere else? )
Mr Smith might not be the man to take us on but he is in charge at the moment and we should continue to back him. He hasn’t let us down in the 3 years or so he’s been in charge. If a change comes, I’m sure the owners will have it sorted, until then we should get behind the him and the team and help drive them on next week. UTV!
