Axel just confirmed, welcome back lad and good luck in the season ahead.

1.) 08 Aug 2021 17:32:43
Despite days worth of articles claiming he has "picked" Newcastle over us due to promised playing time - got to love NewsNow and all those 'in the know'.

2.) 08 Aug 2021 19:14:44
Lol there has being a lot of that going on this window, villa conducting their business really well and everyone involved are keeping the information well under wraps and allowing us to get our deals done without interference which is great and probably saving us a few quid aswel.

22 Jul 2021 19:17:12
My mate reckons Bailey is as good as done, I don't know anything about these issues that have being mentioned, seems like a quality addition I'm excited for this almost as much as Buendia.

1.) 22 Jul 2021 20:15:39
Whacky, It might just be jealous idle gossip, from a team who are coming to terms with the fact the can`t compete with us anymore.
Or that once more another player has chosen us over them.
Our management have my backing on any player they choose.

2.) 24 Jul 2021 15:04:28
I respect the optimism in regard to a potential fee for Marv, but no one will cough up £20M. He has been seldom used by Smith and was hardly an ever-present before we bought him.

He breaks up play well, but doesn’t do a lot with the ball. If we sold him, we could really need a new no. 6 because Luiz, Sanson and McGinn don’t really do that role justice. However, Smith and Co. seem to have different ideas because they fancied Ward-Prowse, another no. 8. Maybe the thought is to go with 2 x 8 and try to adapt, although we did get overrun at times last season.

Apart from Sarr, the only other recent mention of a listed DM I can recall was Zamba Anguissa - and that trail seems to have gone dead.

15 Jul 2021 10:00:39
Ed is it true we have made a third offer for ESR?

{Ed002's Note - I am not sure on the situation with offers, but I do know that Arsenal have rejected the opportunity to meet and discuss the player with Aston Villa.}

1.) 15 Jul 2021 13:52:22
Thanks Ed👍 I seen an article on news now saying we bid just under 33 million with add ons bringing up to 38 million but I’m not inclined to believe these things unless they come from multiple sources.

{Ed002's Note - Typically multiple sources will come from the same source.}

05 Jul 2021 00:11:30
Hi Ed, I've seen an article saying we have bid for Tammy, I want to believe it but I'm thinking it would be more out there on all the headlines if we did, do you think there's much chance of it happening?
Also ESR rumours not going away, likelihood of arsenal accepting if we come with a third bid of around 35 ish mill? How bad do they want funds to go and spend on their own squad.?
Finally have you heard of us having concrete interest in anyone who the tabloids or our own posters haven't picked up on yet?
Cheers 👍.

{Ed002's Note - (a) Aston Villa have informed Chelsea that they are interested in Tammy Abraham, as have others, but I don't think there has been a bid just yet. (b) Aston Villa are certainly interested in ESR and Arsenal are certainly in need of selling players but I doubt Arsenal will want to sell him as there are plenty of others they want to let go of first. So it is possible rather than probable.}

1.) 05 Jul 2021 08:47:52
A reported £32 million bid going in for ESR for me personally think this is a lot of money for a unproven PL player surely that could be spent on a more experienced player in his position? I've not seen him play so to be honest so I can't really comment on his ability.

{Ed077's Note - ESR has some PL experience. He did play around 2 dozens games in the PL for Arsenal last season.

Didn't you pay a similar fee for someone with actual no PL experience last season, for Watkins? And it didn't turn out that bad now, has it?

2.) 05 Jul 2021 09:03:25
Can’t understand why we are after someone for that Number 10 role when most agree we’d benefit from an out and out defensive midfielder. We have 3 player who can play that number 10 role adequately, we have arguably one player who could play that defensive midfield role to about premier league survival level, on current evidence.

Hope we end up getting someone for this position.

3.) 05 Jul 2021 09:48:59
I have a mate who is a Newcastle fan and apparently he has heard a premiership side has made an enquiry about Saint Maximin he knows we are looking for a wide man and is putting two and two together and coming up with five he is assuming we are that club, it would be really good if that were the case however I doubt very much that is the case.

4.) 05 Jul 2021 10:05:15
Very true Ed we did but Watkins was a proven goal scorer in the Championship and for me was worth a punt but ESR for me is going to be more of a gamble I feel. As I said I've not seen him play so I can really say much on the guy and as Chris has said we are awash with attacking players at the moment unless Grealish goes.

{Ed077's Note - ESR did impress for Huddersfield (?) in the Championship and has done well for Arsenal too. Whether an AM is of real need for AV or not might depend on the summer business.

5.) 05 Jul 2021 13:32:07
I think an AM is a must for Villa this summer. Our biggest issue is ball retention, we need more players who are comfortable in possession and can take the ball in tight situations like Grealish, the top teams all have this ability. ESR has a lot of similar traits to Grealish in this respect so I can understand why we are pushing hard to sign him, he also has the ability to play wide if needed during a match so Villa would have amazing flexibility and movement with Grealish, ESR and Buendia behind Watkins. Not to mention pressing. I can't see it happening but if it does, it takes Villa to another level in my opinion.

6.) 05 Jul 2021 14:33:35
I am in Chris’s camp I don’t really think an AM should be top of our priority list, I don’t know why we don’t push McGinn into a more attacking role similar to where he plays for Scotland and push the boat out and try to land either Bissouma or Berge.

7.) 05 Jul 2021 15:26:58
Its a Defensive mid for me as well, as chris has said, I think the majority were asking for this type of player for a long time.
We need someone who has the class, someone to stamp his mark on a position we have been no better than average in for ages.
I think if our next bid for ESR fails we should forget it, and try and get Axel back in as well.

8.) 05 Jul 2021 18:14:29
I think the signing of an ESR type will help hugely from a defensive perspective though lads, as will Buendia. Both capable of playing an agressive press but unlike last year, when we win the ball we will be able to keep it. I think we will sign a DMF as well by the way but understand why an AMF is priority for Smith.

9.) 05 Jul 2021 18:32:42
I get what you are saying BK, I was always complaining at our lack of ball retention.
It was coming back at us far too often and easily, consequently we were always defending, so yes totally agree mate.
But I think with Buendia helping Jack (if he stays) we are more than capable of holding the ball up, we are better than we used to be.
Watkins needs to have an outlet, he can`t do it all on his own, so I am hoping he will now have that.

10.) 05 Jul 2021 18:40:33
If ESR is the priority at the expense of bringing in a proven quality DM, there could be a solution if we go in for Axel as back up for Konsa and Mings.
I think Axel has all the attributes to become an effective DM.
I remember reading a lot of talk suggesting Konsa could also make a quality DM a while back also.
However there’s every chance we could get Axel if MU succeed in getting Varane, and if we do why not try him in that DM role while our first choice centre backs are fit.
A lot of ifs in there I know but you never know Axel could end up being our Bissouma. He would be a lot cheaper and would be always available to play the centre back role if needed.

11.) 05 Jul 2021 19:11:42
Hi Mark, hope all is good mate.
Totally with you on Axel, like I say we should concentrate on getting him in, we need him either way.
How about Young as a DM, can tackle, can pass, has good vision, he could give us 12 months while we find a gem.

12.) 05 Jul 2021 19:16:45
If we want an attacking midfielder how about Coutinho apparently Barcelona are prepared to let him go for £21 million, he supposedly wants to come back to the premiership, he is proven at this level, adds experience and the prospect of Grealish, Coutinho, and Buendia would in my opinion be very exciting. In reality he probably would want a higher profile club but if you don’t ask you don’t get.

13.) 05 Jul 2021 19:35:40
Definitely worth trying Young also Dave, perhaps doesn’t have the pace and aerial ability that Axel has though but has tons of experience.
Coutinho would be great John, still got a few more quality years in him I would imagine, by which time the likes of Chukwuemeka will be good and ready to take over.

14.) 05 Jul 2021 21:26:29
Thanks Ed 👍
Guys I’m not sure a DM is on smiths agenda this year tbh we have marvellous and Doug, marvellous has proved himself with his defensive side when given the chance (I know his distribution is not so good as Doug but putting better players around him is going to give him more options) I think Doug will play that role against the lesser teams and marvellous will play against the teams who will pin us back more. matic is a player I wouldn’t say no to, would come cheap and very handy to bring on when we need to hold out for a result.
Lots of talk about winks but our current midfield mauled him when we played spuds at the end of the season I can’t say I’d like him in a villa jersey.
tbh I think if we want an upgrade in that position it’s going to cost 40+ mill and I just don’t see it being spent this year in that position, smith won’t take maginn out of the team if he signs ESR so he has to find a space for him also.

06 Jun 2021 01:16:59
Another rumour I've just seen, 18 year old Senegalese midfielder, PAPE SARR, don't know much about him but he's described in the same mould as gueye, seems we have enquired about him he plays ligue 1 for metz, looks like he has potential but I'm sure he might have other admirers, all in all seems like a player who would fit the bill at VP.

1.) 06 Jun 2021 08:33:42
I heard about this kid few weeks back Whackattack and as you say described as next Gueye/ Kante type player, I think he is the type of player we definitely require but there is a lad a Monaco who's 20 his name begins with Tchumondia or something along those lines plays for French under 21's and watched him during under 21's tournament who I personally I think we should go for. Both are the type of defensive destroyer that we require.

2.) 08 Jun 2021 11:32:38
I have had a bit more of a look at Sarr. He looks a handy box to box player with a good long shot within his arsenal.

It is always a bit difficult to translate performance clips to how you would imagine he would perform in the Premier League. I suspect he could come good after a bedding-in period, but I struggle to see the press’s correlation between him as a DM and Sadio Mane, who is a LW. Apart from nationality and both being footballers, the comparisons look completely dim-witted to me.

Horrible first half, second to every ball, winning nothing in midfield and as for our marking it's non existent, big effort needed in the second half to get anything from this, think I would take off Ramsey and stick on Bert, or bring on nakamba and left maginn or Doug push forward a bit more.

25 Sep 2021 21:09:23
O. G. S "their goal was offside" is he for real?? "I didn't like the way they got around Bruno to try put him off" seriously does this guy want 3 points gift wrapped and with a bow on top every week???
Yo Ole we don't like the fact that the refs are required to wear united kits on under their own kit, huge performance and result, being a long time coming against those jokers but we got it and it feels damn good,
VTID, Holte Enders in the sky, I know 1 guy who would of enjoyed that one and I'll be thinking of you tomorrow ?.

1.) 26 Sep 2021 09:58:09
Mike Dean was probably United’s best player yesterday, and we would probably have won more comfortably with unbiased referee. OGS is just making pathetic excuses to try and save his job.

2.) 26 Sep 2021 10:27:27
Gollum showed yesterday that he has no class at all, he was totally like a spoilt child . Now if that was Pep or Klop they would of at least, said about their own teams failings . He is a man under pressure, Iv said before he’s been lucky up till now, but yesterday we showed him up .
Onwards&Upwards Villaforever.

22 Sep 2021 19:43:02
Not expecting much with that line up, don't know why steer is in goal, total downer as soon as I seen the team, I know Chelsea also starting a weaker team but look at their bench towards ours.

1.) 22 Sep 2021 20:44:30
From what I can hear, Villa have had the better chances .
Archer with a bit more luck, could of had two .

2.) 22 Sep 2021 22:01:55
Ashley young had a terrible game I don’t understand why he was given a peno ahead of archer, the kid has confidence running through his veins, had emi being in goal I would of backed him to save 1 or 2. I guess smith didn’t want to progress, I can’t see us getting any result against united at the weekend so I would of expected a stronger bench at the minimum tonight, game was there to be won. the youngsters done very well to be fair, I thought we had the better chances.

3.) 22 Sep 2021 22:10:28
Excellent - were out of an unnecessary cup competition. I’m not sure anyone had held the League/ Milk/ Carabo cup in any great esteem for some years now. Having said that, the penalty shootout was a shambles. I’m sure the inclusion of Barkley was making a point ?.

4.) 23 Sep 2021 03:00:13
The only point Barkleys inclusion made was that we were 100% right not to make a move for him, done absolutely nothing on the pitch, apart from scoring a peno on a keeper who would struggle in the championship, Barkley will be playing in the championship soon enough Chelsea will only pay him for warming the bench for so long. I knew we were doomed as soon as we got cheated on the coin flip before the shootout, it looked like we won the toss till the ref called it a dud flip and flipped it a second time to decide which end the penalties would be taken.

5.) 23 Sep 2021 07:41:13
What on Earth happened with that coin flip? Looked like we won it twice and the ref just kept doing it until Chelsea won?!

6.) 23 Sep 2021 09:41:45
Was very suspect and young was not happy at all, times like that is where you need a microphone on the ref just like the rugby refs, they can’t hide behind excuses that way, will never happen for that reason alone, most are so bad at their job that they need something to hide behind, very rare to see a bad rugby ref at the highest level, and rugby so much more technical and harder to get right, kudos to those guys.

20 Sep 2021 13:54:26
Is it just me or does anyone else think the saints penalty controversy was an absolute shambles, for me a stone wall penalty, Walker came from behind, made no contact with the ball and took the player down.
seen on sky sports app "ref watch" they reckon they got it right, that the saints player ran into the back of walkers leg, I think back to the penalties that united got against us the last few times we played, for me it was a joke of a decision to reverse the red card and penalty, not only can these super clubs spend as much as they like but when it's not going their way they get the help needed from the refs.

1.) 20 Sep 2021 13:59:08
Interested to hear the Ed’s opinions aswel.

{Ed001's Note - that was clearly a pen. Walker blatantly took him out, the refereeing standard has dropped back to abysmal again.}

2.) 20 Sep 2021 17:14:33
Think you right, definite penalty for me. They are using the “ran into his leg” argument to justify it, but wasn’t it Pogba who ran into Dougies leg against us and got a Pen for it and they said that was clever play? Surely can’t have it both ways.

{Ed001's Note - there were a few of them this weekend, Liverpool benefitted from one against Palace that would usually be a pen and there were a lot of dubious, at best, decisions in the Leicester game. Refs are back to protecting each other over doing their job.}

3.) 21 Sep 2021 12:05:47
Agree Ed, I only seen highlights of the other games but I thought it was a tragic display across the league from refs last weekend, thankfully we had a better ref than previous weeks. something really needs to be done about it, the pundits need to start earning their money now and keep calling them out on it, they are meant to be fans like the rest of us.

19 Sep 2021 18:31:46
After watching Spurs v Chelsea I have to say we gave them a better game playing away than Spurs did at home, kante and georginio destroyed them, Harry kane looks like he hates his life in that team, I think we are better than our league position reflects, can't wait until we are about 10 games in to see where we're at.

Wouldn’t mind either or both mark, looks like the CM or CDM position is the more pressing of the 2, I still think there will be at least 1 more incoming before the window shuts, hard to tell who it will be as our business is kept pretty quiet and the “in the know people” generally don’t have a clue.

I guess your right we shouldn’t be losing from that position and players should be able to remain calm and compose themselves at this point, they have had some big games, being under huge pressure at times but that came out of nowhere, we were winning easily while not playing anything like our best, as soon as nakamba came on our defenders started to panick, our players should of responded better after conceding the first, I know the subs were forced in a way but each one had a negative effect,
I don’t want to be in a group of smith out posters, I just have huge doubts about his ability to bring us any further, our owners come across pretty ambitious so I don’t know how long they will remain patient, the Newcastle takeover will make our goal of top 6 even harder, if the ownership don’t see a way to progress up the table they will stop pumping money in.

Nathan Baker, ciaran Clarke, joe bennet to name 3 defenders a heck of a lot worse than mings and targett. can’t blame the players, they ain’t being coached properly imo, if they ain’t playing the way dean wants them to they shouldn’t be on the pitch, the buck stops with smith, I can’t see Newcastle finishing higher than us this year, I fancy them to go down and I really hope they do as it will give us an extra year or 2 to flex our muscles before they can spend stupid money.

I never said we were nailed on for higher than 10th mate, I’m saying that dean won’t bring us any higher, be it our 3rd year or 5th or 10th back in the premier league, he’s not a bad manager, he will keep us safe but that’s as far as it go’s for him,
Pluffy mentioned further up that we miss John terry, I have to agree with him, our defence is after taking a hit this year.
And yes we beat Benitez a few weeks back, but we didn’t beat him with his full team, they were missing at least 2 or 3 of their best players.
It’s deans job to see where we have a problem and solve it but he is regularly way to slow in doing it or like yesterday didn’t do it at all.

Simon that’s just a lie to be honest, we said lots after Everton and united, we gave them the credit they deserved! and yesterday they deserved a right rollicking, they deserved to be slated, I go so far as to say they deserve to lose part of their wages, they are paid top dollar to play football, what they done in the last 20-25 mins wasn’t football and they shouldn’t be paid for serving up that tripe.
80 mins on the clock and they get a goal back on us, I’m sorry but there is no excuse against a team of wolves low quality to let them get a second or a third, as a player, as a manager you do whatever it takes to hold on to your 3 points, it would be one thing if it was against city or another team with the quality they have but come on, wolves? Your havin a laugh. I heard no apology in smiths post match interview, I thought we were poor for the whole game to be honest, never looked like scoring in the first half, the formation just wasn’t working, we were lucky to be 2 nil up if you ask me, smith said the performance was better than against spurs but I don’t agree, we were just playing a team that’s even worse than spurs,
Did we learn nothing from the lesson we got from that game and let son destroy us on his own practically, yesterday we let podence do the exact same but we were that bad that it only took him 15 mins to destroy us. we are learning nothing from our mistakes, we might learn for a week but then we forget it again, and if we don’t qualify for Europe this year or at least be very close to it I think we can say goodbye to Martinez and maginn.
I’m getting tired of hearing the old “where we were 3 years ago” line. forget where we were 3 years ago we have spent the guts of 400 million in those 3 years so you would expect to be better would you not? And the ambition of the fans shouldn’t and isn’t just being better than we were 3 years ago,
I said yesterday was on smith and I stand by it, he picked the team he made the subs and he watched it not working for way to long as usual, I don’t know if he should be sacked as I don’t know if we can get anyone better but it’s my firm opinion that we are never going higher than 10th and definitely not getting Europe with him leading us, he’s just not tactically good enough, any decent manager in the league will beat him.

I don’t agree with a lot of things you post on here 4eva but I have to agree with that one, all on smith this one, no ambition once again, absolute clown if you ask me, don’t know how we managed to lose, I think those substitutions drained every bit of out confidence at the back, Ashley young stealing a living, axel is so clumsy I don’t see what anyone sees in him tbh, give me hause any day over him, hause always a threat in the air also. gutted but we got what we deserved in the end.
