Villa have appointed Johan Lange from FC Copenhagen as our new sporting director. Guys seems to have a good eye for talent but we will need to see who he buys for us.

AlexVTID

1.) 30 Jul 2020 13:31:54
You say he has a good eye for talent but how many of those he has 'spotted have gone on to have a top career? Seems his biggest asset is seeing potential, signing them really cheap and selling them on for a profit a few years later. This isn't what Villa need. We need players who have already reached their potential and are ready to move us up a gear.

2.) 30 Jul 2020 15:26:07
RHLT, are we ever happy when there is an appointment made, the bloke ain`t took his coat off yet and you are complaining.
You have probably never heard of him before today.
Who would you have appointed, and why.

3.) 30 Jul 2020 15:41:53
Sure RHLT I guess you could argue has he proven himself to be able to recruit talent that we need right now. However I trust in our owners.

4.) 30 Jul 2020 16:05:52
Helped Copenhagen win leagues and remain competitive whilst consistently selling best players to line the owners pockets, knows what his doing clearly. Hopefully he can replicate the talent spotting at a higher level.

5.) 30 Jul 2020 16:48:33
Sky sports news did an in depth look at FC Copenhagen. Their set up is identifying potential at a young age and nurturing it through to the 1st team. Success inevitably brings in big bids, they sell, but the next batch are already waiting to take their places. Constant conveyor belt of talent, income from sales and a sustainable model for a somewhat, no disrespect, club. What's not to get excited about if we can achieve similar? Plus us being a "bigger " club we need not need to sell any of our own batch of prodigies to constantly feed the premier league beast.
If you can find the article its well worth a read and may stir up a little excitement for Villa's future especially with the revamp of the academy. It won't happen overnight but moving forward it's a massive step in the right direction. Very similar to the Ajax model.

6.) 30 Jul 2020 17:17:27
Villadave, I had heard of him before today as my uncle is a Wolves fan of many years and he said that Lange was just a yes man to Solbakken when he was the assistant manager at Molineux. In regards to winning the Danish League, its a 2 horse race so either FC Copenhagen or Brondby ever win it.

Who would I rather have you ask. Someone currently out of work with a proven track record is Damien Comolli. Worked at Monaco, Arsenal, Spurs and Liverpool and players he and his team scouted and brought to the PL include: Gael Clichy, Eboue, Kolo Toure, Luka Modric, Berbatov and Luis Suarez. He also recommended Jordan Henderson to Liverpool.

I understand that he also dealt with potential but he had a proven track record and is available.

7.) 30 Jul 2020 17:51:49
Just being negative for negative sake, and backing your points up with nonsense RHLT.

“its a 2 horse race so either FC Copenhagen or Brondby ever win it. ” Midtjylland have won it two of the last three seasons, and Aalborg not long before that. Worth checking facts before you spout off.

Owners have acted quickly, would have obviously interviewed multiple candidates, give the guy a chance.

8.) 30 Jul 2020 18:42:29
So let me get this right. I've come on this opinion page and given my opinion but because some don't agree, I'm deemed to be negative? You ask me a question and explanation which I answer in full but I'm being negative for negatives sake.
No point asking questions if you ain't prepared to listen to an answer.

ChrisAVFC, I stand corrected on Brondby winning the league and it being a 2 horse race. It should be 3 horse, Copenhagen, Midtjylland and Aalborg.

9.) 30 Jul 2020 19:11:12
Not complaining about your opinion RHLT, just pointing out that whoever walks through the door someone will complain.
I happen to think it is very premature to complain about someone who has not even met the players yet.
Surely its better to trust our owners, and give opinions when the dice have been rolled.

10.) 30 Jul 2020 19:13:58
You seem to be confused, so I will try and make “ backing your points up with nonsense RHLT” as clear as possible.

You said it was a two horse race implying Lange has had it easy, in the past decade 4 teams have won that title, your statement is not correct, and if you are using that to help your decision, you are misled.

Nothing to do with not wanting to have debate with different opinions, we have great back and forths on here, with multiple poster with all different view point. I myself didn’t ask you any question, just pointed out the incorrect information you provided when giving your opinion.

There’s something to be said for people who constantly claim to want something else. We have appointed him less than 12 hours ago, and you are already trying to discredit hit achievements and credentials. Give the man a chance.

11.) 30 Jul 2020 19:25:35
I'm prepared to give him a chance but when you look at his credentials, it appears that his role is to buy players young, nurture them then sell them for profit. I thought we would have appointed someone like the guy at Man City who looks for players to evolve the team over a longer period. I hope I'm proved wrong and he unearths some gems who will stay with us for a long time.

12.) 30 Jul 2020 19:58:20
We need to give this guy a chance, I think Suso’s card had been marked for some time and I would assume that the board will have researched the various candidates before settling on Lange his record at Wolves was as a coach not as a Director of Football totally different roles. Moose with regards to us bringing our own crop of youngsters through I am absolutely with you that has to be our aspiration but I doubt if we will ever manage to keep the out of the hands of the Premiership big guns, even when we a fairly competitive side we still lost the likes of Yorke and Young to Utd but we live in hope.

On a separate note do we know what’s happening re Terry? Based on the defensive capabilities our back four displayed for most of the season I am not sure what he brings to the coaching team i.

13.) 30 Jul 2020 20:46:27
Nothing for me John.
I have just been talking about him, not many fighting his corner.
I think he only has one eye on the ball, and that his aspirations lie/ lay elsewhere mate.

14.) 30 Jul 2020 21:27:38
Villajohn I agree that keeping our next generation out of the hands of the "Sky Super 6" will be a very big ask but we have to start somewhere and if we're producing players other teams covet then we're heading in the right direction. It may be a slow gradual climb to the top table in the land of milk and honey but as long as we show some ambition and steady progress in the seasons ahead it'll be a start. Speaking of which Carney Chukweza or however his last name is spelt lol signing his 1st contact with some of the big boys sniffing around is a plus point and clearly shows that Aston Villa still has some pull for players 👍.

In the times of the virus I can't imagine too many people will have loose lips. Scouting staff at Villa (granted we don't know if Pitarch will survive till September) are still interested in milot rashica. Very quick and skilful player supposedly being looked at to allow Grealish to play where he wants, centrally. It is understood at Villa that we need to improve our wingers (Trez might slowly be getting up to speed) and he is the aspirational target. Raschica will be leaving Werder come the end of the season (Werder in relegation playoff spot) but there are plenty of big hitters out there looking at him. If we invest well to replace Douglas (Man City will take him back) and manage to keep key assets by showing ambition that the owners suggest they have (and we stay up) next season could see Villa break the bank again but on a few key players.
I'd say we need a striker, winger and a new CDM when we get rid of a few players either on loan (Davis) or sell (Lansbury, Jota) . UTV.

29 Jan 2020 14:10:00
Allegedly Jota is off to Fulham, maybe Smith will admit that he might have made a mistake. This surely adds substance to the Pereiro rumour being true? If not Pereiro then another winger.

Dean Smith not at training this morning, was in Belgium supposedly to bring Ally Samatta back over with him. Villa want this wrapped up by this evening for training tomorrow. UTV.

AlexVTID

1.) 16 Jan 2020 13:57:13
Villa also having a news conference shortly with no set time, we can all hope it will be Smith with a signing.

If i remember correctly Villa normally do conferences the day before, so this is reason to be hopeful.

2.) 16 Jan 2020 15:17:17
Just seen on the net aswell don't know much about him but klopp rates him.

3.) 16 Jan 2020 17:06:39
Certainly knows where the goal is - last season he got 23 in 38 games, which is a 61% hit rate.

09 Jan 2020 11:13:46
Reina's agent just seen inside Milan headquarters. Supposedly confirming the signing. Shame for Nyland as I thought he did well.

AlexVTID

1.) 09 Jan 2020 23:04:18
U think nyland good . Also think if get reina maybe keep him on his toes and the way were going threw keepers could do with another .

Building off of other posts.
The lack of signings is worrying now, ideally you would have wanted to have new players in the squad for this week away in Wales. The window has been open for almost a month now, and whilst I understand Lange will need time to talk to players etc, however if we have the money to spend we really need to be getting a move on.
We play Sheffield of the 19th of next month, and if we line up with Samatta we almost signal we are happy with mediocrity. We can't play the team that kept us up, we need additions to make their debuts on the 19th, end of.
I think this week for me at least is the latest we need to be bringing people in. Just so they have a few weeks training with the other lads.
I see a lot of `Villa to make imminent bid` but nothing actually coming to fruition yet.
Just hope that we can get some players in ASAP.

Borja Baston has been thrown into the mix. If this is real Suso should quit, signing a striker with 14 goals in 3 seasons is pointless. Could have kept gabby and got more than that.

AlexVTID

13 Jan 2020 16:49:12
I'm starting to think that Reina has decided against signing, it's almost 5 an no work lmao.

AlexVTID

1.) 13 Jan 2020 19:45:16
Just signed on lone.

13 Jan 2020 09:18:24
Dean last night said villa would `cope with it` if we can't sign a striker by the 18th. I'm sorry but if we can't sign a striker almost 2/ 3rds through the month what makes him think we will at all.
If we do not sign a striker we are down, ideally we need two.
And if this is his idea of "coping" then wow, we are truly in a predicament.

Piatek is a no go, looking for CL football not a relegation battle. I'm struggling to see who we might sign that will do the job.
We were crying out for more attackers in the summer, we signed Wesley, Trez and Jota as new players and AEG as a returning.
Because of our poor recruitment in attack we have had to play our best player out of position to even look good in attack.

This can only be put at the feet of of Smith and Suso.

we signed
1GK in Heaton (v good)
Mings, Hause, Engels, Konsa, Targett, Guilbert - all good players no problem here but do we need 5 CBs?
Luiz and Nakamba as midfielders
AEG returned, then Trez (struggling to adapt) and Jota (useless) on the wings
And then one, yes one, solitary striker.

We then have as backup a past-it championship striker and Davis who is unproven at any level and should be out on loan.
According to our squad list this is the current breakdown of our squad

5 GKs
9 DF
10 MF
3 Wingers
3 strikers, 1 of which isn't even liked by the manager

It's ludicrous, we currently have by most estimations a better winger than Jota in Green out on loan.

I wouldn't hold your breath on a decent striker to keep us up, more likely to get Hogan back and have him lead the line.

We are going down UTV.

See, there's always an up side! -now is the time to see if our scouts are worth their money or just not worth a rub-what you got to save deano, show us some magic!

I think 3 or 4 players is max we will see. Problem is for that though is that we will be waiting for a while and start to panic. Need a LB to cover Targett/ push him. I think now that trez is out we need another winger or 2 depending if we keep Jack (I think we will) and put him CAM like Dean has been.

So most likely I see 2 wingers, LB and a CAM coming in.

Tammy is vey unlikely, and will only be bought if we put jack at 10 imo.

If i'm honest, I'd rather we spent £28m on Watkins who can also play as a winger over £20mil on Wilson who does not excite me at all.

Supposedly Dorset had 7 questions, when he went to twitter ask what questions to drop out of the 4 he had on Maguire, one on Sterling and 2 on newcomers; he didn't seem to understand that literally everyone from Michael Owen to Blues fans were asking about Grealish. Maybe he didn't need to ask 4 questions about Maguire lmao.

Decent looking player, not a winger but more of a wide attacking midfield player (so not sprinting down the wing, more of a technical player) . Jack wants to play number 8, so if he stays Eze could be the one who actually plays wider, or someone of his ilk. I think that's the type of player we need to bring in to keep Jack, a winger/ attacking mid to allow Jack to play centrally.

Hey Dave,
I don't think we have to, that's the mentality of a feeder club which we should strive not to be. If we sell our best players, most influential players, we struggle to replace them. Look at Benteke as the most recent example. We sold our top goal scorer to a bigger club because we needed the funds instead of building a team. What happened that season? We were relegated.

I think if we continue down the path of past seasons we are doomed. FFP is meaningless and I'm sure we will make decent purchases this year around the spine of the team that we now have after shedding some dead weight.

If we always sell our best players, we will never suprass mid table and that's the harsh truth. And mid table teams are more likely to be pulled into a relegation fight. Better to keep our best and use them as lures to other great players and build a team. If we strip it to the bare bones each year we will be relegated within the next 5.

I think many people were concerned when we started the season with no proven goalscorer. In the past we had gabby as backup who we at least knew would offer something, and would maybe score if we were lucky. But he knew the prem.
Most wanted Wesley to succeed because we needed him to; and there lies the issue. He had no chanced to become acclimatised to the prem alongside a more experienced person whom he could push.
For me 3 signings were non-essential and borderline unnecessary. Either douglas/ nakamba, Jota and Hause.
I'd have much rather signed another striker in the place of those 4 if i'm honest. We are a defensive heavy squad that can't defend. Amazing.

Smith all but confirmed that we won't be doing any business today, ideally you'd want a signing early in the week anyway. I'd have just bitten the bullet and begged for benteke on monday as we need 2 signings. Shame seeing as Dean said he expected a striker before the 12th.

Purslow addressed this a couple weeks back at the fans forum, I think this is all just a delay to purposefully get more clicks. The money needed to balance the books are fine, and we are able to spend around £40mil (if we stay up) and be fine. Obviously they don't want to spend this £40mil if not necessary. As far as I'm aware according to people who know the most, including our CEO, there is nothing to be worried about.
