Hi Tony, I too like Traore but he is a bit hot and cold, he seems to be injury prone too. I think Unai may use him mainly for cover and as an impact player late on in games, he does have the ability to turn things around and maybe that role may suit him better, I just hope he stays fit enough for us to find out.

I quite like Traoré as well. I think that he is a decent winger/forward, and I'm glad that he will stay at Aston Villa! Up the Villa!

Vitinha from Braga seems to be the latest name doing the rounds. 13 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions so far this season. Anyone have a view on him?

What little I’ve heard of him is positive, good stats also

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Jan 2023 12:55:08
Spurs and west ham are after him as well.
He was identified by West Ham back in November. (Under the name Vitor Oliveira)

Quick and very physical - picked up a few cards, letting defenders know he's there.

Last season he featured in 24 games in liga Portugal and scored 7 with 3 assists.

You have to remember that the league isn't really the best with only Porto, Sporting, Benfica and Braga always fighting for top 4.

I don't think Braga will want him to leave due to their currently in 2nd, but big cash changes minds quickly.

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Jan 2023 01:03:51
Well I don't claim to be in the know myself but I have just heard that Unai Emery has set aside a significant amount of cash to seal the signing of Jonathan David.
This would be an incredible signing and one that would surely please all our fans, if this happens then Villa are getting to Europe and I'm going to party hard, I just hope it materializes, but the good thing is that we haven't got long to wait to find out for certain, this is massive news if true. Personally I think we will make two significant signings but I have no idea who that might be, I don't think the media have a clue either. Hopefully it's a good day for us Villans and we get some real quality through the door, but if not I guess we will all have to wait until summer. UTV

Agree0 Disagree0

31 Jan 2023 12:39:28
Hi One AV. We have been linked before, so I specifically watched him in the World Cup. In reality he is not an upgrade. I'm afraid he is another one pundits have labelled at our level and then lazily 'linked'. There are quite a few, Weston McKennie, Danjuma etc, etc. We really should be looking a bit higher, and I expect that we are.

Agree0 Disagree0

01 Feb 2023 03:18:23
Hi Villa56, turned out that none of the links were fruitful, I'm a little disappointed as I did expect a couple of incomings but I'm happy we resisted the temptation to panic buy. I still think the squad is ample to take us comfortably through to the summer with progress where I expect that window to be a little busier for us. I'm interested to see how the Duran signing pans out, I don't know an awful lot of him if I'm honest, but he reminds me of Benteke, I have a good feeling about him and I think in time he could become that goal scorer we have lacked. Hopefully the rest of the season goes well and with a bit of luck Europe, but the likes of Chelsea and a few others have spent big so those top places will become congested, but you never know. UTV

30 Jan 2023 17:21:31
I don't think anyone's coming our way! Emery obviously wants young talent like Nico Williams, if he can't get them he'll wait and be patient! The only possible one might be connor Gallagher but I've only just heard today that there might be interest in him

25 Jan 2023 08:02:50
I get the impression if Emery can’t get the players he wants now, then he isn’t going to buy anyone for the sake of it, I think from what you can glean from the rumours the players he seems to really want are Guendouzi, Delafeou and Dembele I think we have a decent chance of landing the first two but with Dembele It wouldn’t surprise me if the club waited until the summer when we can potentially pick him up for free as opposed to paying a fee right now. It may be a risky approach but to be honest we aren’t in any danger of going down, and qualifying for Europe is an extremely long shot so it may well be that sticking with what we have allowing the coach use the rest of this campaign as in effect an early pre season so the current squad are fully au fair with the coach and how he wants to play, and then go big in the summer may be what the club decides go with although I must confess the striker situation does make me a tad nervous.

25 Jan 2023 12:39:41
LOTM agree with your thoughts on Emery not buying just for the sake of it.
However, we can’t let players go on perm or loan deals if it means leaving our squad depleted.
We need to bring in a striker at the very least, hopefully a winger too.
At the moment this window is panning out as average. The summer should see us making huge strides.

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Jan 2023 09:09:52
Yes no panic buys. I have faith that Emery won’t buy for the sake of it too. Well bring in a max of 2 I reckon though.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Jan 2023 16:06:58
I’m not so sure we’ll bring in anyone now. I think we’ve got what we’ve got.
We’ve let players go either perm or on loan and now the squad is thin.
I don’t want to sign just anyone and signing players in January is more difficult.
If we don’t invest now and finish 9th or even 8th we’ll be more attractive in the summer.
However, if we fall away and end up 14th or 15th we won’t be able to attract those same players in the summer.
We have to be realistic.
It is a gamble either way.

I have a friend whose nephew works at VP I pick up snippets from time to time not always reliable which is why I don't tend to share on here but I am sharing this one as it sounds plausible to me.

Apparently the striker Emery wants is Toney, whilst Brentford are willing to do business apparently not until the summer, the hierarchy are nervous re the betting issue and would like that resolved before paying big money. The club wanted to hold onto Ings until the summer but he was unhappy about his lack of game time and was pushing for a move. The club are willing to invest in a striker but not big money as they see any purchase now as purely a stop gap until the summer.

Thoughts?

Proven goal scorer but not sure about they grey cloud hanging over him, I’d hope it was all done and dusted by then.
Backup goal keeper is another area I’d like to see sorted out.

Agree0 Disagree0

21 Jan 2023 01:28:27
A couple of years back, I suggested we should have bought Toney from Peterborough when he was snapped up by Brentford, but apparently we didn’t want to delve down two divisions (didn’t do us any harm with David Platt). Today there was an article outlining the best bargain youngsters of the last 12 months including Leeds golden boy Gnonto, reported to have been bought for around £6m. We seem to have been bleating on about our academy system, whilst not blooding many of them, and simultaneously not snapping up some of these hidden gems that everyone else’s recruitment teams are on top of. I’m sure Emery’s team will bear us more fruit ?

Interesting take by John Cross on Talksport who seems to think we will land Guendouzi if we are prepared to pay the asking price, but that we will also listen to offers for Digne as Moreno is likely to be first choice and Digne won’t be prepared to warm the bench. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

In fairness to Jonny I have seen the Dembele rumour too. Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2023 21:55:27
I see we are being linked with Guendouzi from Marseille apparently Emery signed him while he was at Arsenal. He has also played quite a bit with Kamara so the two know each other's qualities and would work well in the heart of the midfield. Having watched quite a bit of the French League he is a definite upgrade on the likes of Dendonker and Nakamba and a more realistic target than the likes of McKennie.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

11 Jan 2023 00:29:09
Would love Guendouzi LOTI, think it would be an incredible signing - Oddly I think he's less realistic than McKennie, I'd be happy with either but if we could snag Guendouzi I'd be over the moon. Give me the following come Feb and I'll be very pleased :-)

Martinez

Cash, Carlos, Mings, Moreno

Guendouzi, Luiz, Kamara, Ramsey

Danjuma, Watkins

Agree0 Disagree0

11 Jan 2023 08:23:27
The reason I think Guendouzi is a more realistic target is because firstly to the best of my knowledge no other premiership clubs have expressed an interest that we know of, secondly Guendouzi had a really positive working relationship with Emery whilst he was at Arsenal. And thirdly and probably most tellingly Marseille are in significant financial difficulties in 2021 they owed in excess of 200 million euros.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed002's Note - Matteo Guendouzi (CM) Marseille want to resist sales until the summer as they cannot sign replacements before then. However, they are currently working toward summer changes and MG maybe available then - or even in January at the right price. Aston Villa and Newcastle have apparently spoken with his agent whilst Juventus has spoken with Marseille.}

11 Jan 2023 10:44:48
Oh, wasnt aware of the financial issues at Marseille - That does give me more hope of signing Guendouzi. This one seems to have come out of nowhere, I wonder was he being eyed for the summer and maybe they feel they can, or have, to do the deal in January to get him? Surely his relationship with Emery would help massively then? What a signing that would be, and give us some many more options.

Moreno deal done then. Let's hope Digne doesn't start throwing his toys around ?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

10 Jan 2023 06:31:20
I personally don't understand this one. I'm not a Digne fan but there are other areas that are more important.
We spent money 12 months ago not really upgrading on what we already had and now we're spending again.
Hopefully it works out but I can't help wondering if a 29 year old playing for Real Betis is going to make much of a difference.

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2023 08:55:21
Apparently Moreno can play anywhere down the left hand side so perhaps he will play both I don’t know, but I agree if it’s to replace Digne then I would have thought other areas need addressing before this one.

10 Jan 2023 11:35:29

Agree0 Disagree0

10 Jan 2023 20:55:47
In our current position this transfer is one of 2 things, both with negatives assuming he's being bought as a left back.
We're in 1 competition so it's not going to be about rotation and it's not a position you would normally rotate outside of cups.

Either Moreno is coming to be first choice or he's coming for a payday and Digne, while not being the best, won't be content with the bench.
If he's coming to play rather than be on the bench and doesn't mess it up then I expect Digne to be gone by the end of next January.

mkennie is class whacky proper box to box mid better than mgginn in my opinion, and moreno a very good player aswell good good tackler and marker

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Jan 2023 13:45:49
I don’t know too much about Moreno but what I have seen of McKennie he looks a good player. For me the interesting thing will be how we use him so if he’s going to play as a box to box midfielder then I think Emery will have to move away from the 4 2 3 1 system because I don’t see McKennie starting in the middle of a three with Coutinho Buendia McGinn available as I would imagine Luiz and Kamara being the holding midfielders, but If we play a straight 4 3 3 I am not sure he how he fits in there either as Kamara is a must Emery seems to like Luiz so that leaves McKennie competing with the ones I mentioned above not forgetting we have Ramsey to come back in. I know we need a squad but I would rather see a winger, out and out striker come in before a central midfielder to be honest

Agree0 Disagree0

06 Jan 2023 14:25:29

Looking over the wall at some of the Hammer's sites, they are despairing at the fact that we are positioning to sign McKennie as Moyes has had his eye on him for a while but they don't think Sullivan will hand over the required funds ?

Agree0 Disagree0

07 Jan 2023 17:35:11
Think McKennie would challenge / potentially replace McGinn in our current set up, a 4-2-2-2 or 4-4-2 while defending - Ramsey on the opposite side with Buendia, McGinn and Coutinho as options off the bench. That's an incredibly dynamic midfield 4 with very good options off the bench and if we purchase Moreno and another striker our bench starts to look extremely strong with Ings, Bailey and Digne probably starting from the bench also. All of a sudden we have some great squad depth!

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Jan 2023 11:48:19
I've just been reading we are favourites to sign Harry Maguire from utd. Wonder if any truth in this or just lazy journalism from the Mail? I'd definitely take him on loan with an option to buy. He clearly doesn't fit in with UTDs plans. Thoughts?

no not for he's so slow

Agree1 Disagree0

04 Jan 2023 16:04:44
There is no chance. His best days are over and he's on a downward slope to obscurity. We will be bringing in Pau Torres in the summer, if not this window, and with Carlos back there won't be room. I suggest these rumours are coming from Harry's agent, because he knows the writing is on the wall and he needs to drum up some interest.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Jan 2023 16:08:37
Pity England wasn't a full time gig, Maguire would be in permanently. Man U defence with Maguire at the heart have been poor for a while, why would want a slow centre back.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Jan 2023 17:18:59
Just saying with the right manager to coach him and build his confidence he could be a different player. He always plays well for England. People keep going on about Carlos coming back, but who's to say after a big injury like he's had he hasn't lost a yard or two of pace? People think he'll come back the same player. I really hope he does but u never know.

WE are well behind many clubs when it comes to finding players.
Why do clubs much smaller than Villa get some real bargains from abroad and then sell them to us at a huge price?
Other clubs manage to lure "special" players for a reasonable fee who light up the prem?
Pool are very good at getting players with reputations and we fail. Nunez for example.
Unless we start getting players that other clubs are looking at we will never achieve what the owners want.
Some of our young players will still be going out on loan when they are in their 20's while at other clubs young players are already in the prem.
We are tardy when it comes to moving players through the ranks.
Chucky could see this and he jumped ship.
Archer and Barry seem to be in the same situation and several other young players.
End or rant!

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jan 2023 16:05:29
Nunez can’t buy a goal it’s a bit of a push to say he lights up the league, but Liverpool are seen as title contenders do players want to go there.
we got kamara for free and Carlos could be a great signing for the money we paid if he recovers properly, I see your point about the young players but our fanbase doesn’t have the patience to develop these players in the premier league, I think our promotion came 2 or 3 years to early for our younger talent to have had the chance in the first team, we can only blame ourselves in my opinion we want results and progress more than we want to see youngsters play.

Agree1 Disagree0

03 Jan 2023 18:03:26
Whack certainly agree about the kids, Archer, Hayden, Young Tim at QPR are all players,we’ve had great hopes for .You sadly just can’t see with Emery how they will get a look in .He’s been brought in to do a job,it if he’s brave enough to take a chance . With the cup coming up perhaps Archer will get a chance .
We have invested in the academy recently, bringing in top youngsters from all over, we’ve had rave reports about many of them, so surely all this won’t go to waste

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jan 2023 19:35:55
Nunez cost the better part of £90mill, we're not shelling out that sort of money.
Barrie clearly isn't developing into the player we thought he would. He's starting to get game time now but not really producing to a level that suggests he'llever make it to our first team.
Multiple managers now have not given Archer much time. It's all well and good scoring goals but a manager has to see that you can get on the ball and do the defensive work also. Not letting him get another loan is poor management though.
We haven't done anything wrong with Tim and he's on the right track. He has players ahead of him but he's getting good experience at the top end of the Championship. If he starts controlling games a little more regularly I'm sure he'll get his chances with us.

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jan 2023 21:26:46
I’m not sure a manager would be too worried about a strikers defensive work rate if he’s banging in 20 to 25 goals a season in the premier league. Some of the great strikers only came alive in and around the18 yard box

Agree0 Disagree0

03 Jan 2023 22:18:47
They are massively in the past, Ruud van Nistlerooy was probably the last of that kind. Maybe an argument for Aguero but that's a luxury afforded to a team with half a billion pounds of players around them.
If you're not contributing more than tap ins nowadays then you won't get played, simple as.
A forward who doesn't either get the team up the pitch or press from the front often doesn't get the chances required to score that many. The manager then sees them as a passenger and drops them.
Archer is too small to be a target man so would be relying on pace and positioning. Multiple managers and coaches obviously all agree that there is something lacking at this moment in time for him to be an effective option at this level.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Jan 2023 12:56:04
You don’t know unless you give the lad a run. He has scored at championship level which he has done when given the chance, which is all he can do and if the rumours are true re Muriqi then I don’t understand why Archer doesn’t get a run I can’t see him being worse than a 1 in 6 centre forward not used to playing in the premiership.

Agree0 Disagree0

04 Jan 2023 13:31:02
I like him but he's only had half a season doing fairly well in the Championship. He did it with a team that suited him also.
Until we start controlling the ball more regularly against better teams then we need someone who is an out ball like Watkins or another strong (er) forward.
Another loan will do him good until Emery gets the rest of the team moulded to what he wants. A good run with someone else while we evolve will hopefully lead to it being right for him to come in.
