Just a hypothetical. Say Kante goes to Chelski for £32M, heard he had a clause of £22M to allow him to speak to other clubs, if Gana's clause is £7.1M, that doesn't mean we have to sell at £7.1M, the Crisp Munchers have a load of money and would be in the market for a player close to what Kante gives them, we could be on to a nice little earner if the planets align. 🤔

Ermmm a buyout clause is a buyout clause
People only need to match it to be able to buy you out
That's why it's called a buyout clause
Why would any club spend a penny more than they need to?

If Kantes was £22M and they're paying £32M, that's where I'm coming from. Didn't Arsenal offer £1 over £40M to talk to Suarez but he didn't end up playing for them? Surely if a player is under contract, by all means you can talk to them if you meet that price, the contract doesn't mean you have to sell though?

You'd have to look at the small print but the whole point of such a clause is to circumvent the bartering process
Delph had a buyout clause of 7 mil; it was met; he went
Benteke had a buyout clause of 32 mil; it was met; he went

If Chelsea are paying 32 mil for a player that has a buyout clause (in the traditional sense) of 22 mil, one of 2 things is true :
1 : Chelsea are clinically insane
2 : The media are making stuff up
I'm going to take a wild stab in the dark and suggest the media are making stuff up

You probably nailed it there Mendax, pretty much means that a contract ain't worth Jack. Something that popped into my head was there was talk of the contracts that had been signed had a 50% cut in wages if we got relegated, so if Gana cost £9M and his buyout clause is £7.1M, he gets to leave and go somewhere that'll bump his wages back up to if we hadn't been relegated, for less than what we paid for him, plus getting a signing on fee, so basically you get rewarded for contributing to our downfall? How the effing eff is that fair?

I think you have to accept that Lerner reduced our status to such a level that the only way we could sign any 1/ 2 decent players would be if they had an exit route if it all went pear shaped. I don't blame them so much. Do I really expect a guy from Senegal who has been living in France to have any affinity for a football club in the heartlands of England that he'd probably never heard of?
Apart from Dakar, can you name me a city in Senegal?
If you played there would it be for love or money?
I blame Lerner for the mess our club ended up in. He's like the Boris Johnson/ Michael Gove of football owners. Totally useless but not aware of the fact.

Welcome aboard Kaydee, the more the merrier i say, just had to say that its a bit unfair to call the upper holte end the prawn sandwich brigade, we've moved on since then, one of the chaps in catering was talking about kelp with mixed welk platter being on the menu, there will be finger nibbles of seaweed, sushi and imported authentic asian wild vegetables.

i must say it sounds absolutely scrummy, if you care to join us we'll be the chaps wearing the club blazers (what else to wear but official attire i say), it will be marvellous to touch base with friends old and new. and afterwards retire to a local ale house to soak up our fellow chaps thoughts and stories.

i for one have been polishing the silver buttons on the old blazer in anticipation, and i'm sure some of our fellow rascals on here will be quaffing with the best of them, so just to get us in the mood, we thought we might start of with a rousing rendition of 'play up the villa, make it a thrilla! 'simply spiffing fun. just ask for bunty or mungo, they'll put you on the right road, you'll be one of the chaps before you know it. welcome to the fold old boy!
