Have we had the 'Danny lngs is refusing to sign a new contract with the Saints' debate yet? Any takers?

With only a year left on his contract it might be possible to aquire Ings for a reasonable fee MD. The problem is with the system we play it would be difficult to fit both Ollie and Ings into the side, and neither of them would be content sitting on the bench. It’s been said that we could play Ollie out wide but we already have good options on both flanks and there may even be another brought in before the deadline. From Ings’s perspective I would imagine at this stage of his career he would want a stab at European competition football and for a reduced price due to his contract situation, I would imagine they’ll be a few takers.

I agree mdf and I think even at a reduced fee you would still be looking at circa £25 to 30 million minimum and I think Ings is 29 and therefore would have little resale value and so wouldn’t fit with the clubs current recruitment strategy. I have long been a supporter of Mitrovic at Fulham I can’t see him staying in the Championship for another season he would push Watkins but wouldn’t be the no 1 striker and gives you an option off the bench if Plan A doesn’t work which is something we have lacked up to now.

I did like him a few years back but he’s had 2 stabs at the premier league and didn’t do much to be honest.

With a better side with better players I think he’d score plenty, the issue is if we want a striker to challenge Watkins without being the first choice 9 then if it isn’t someone like Mitrovic then the question is who? because if we are being honest we aren’t going to play 2 up top and I don’t think we are going to splash huge sums for someone to spend most of the season on the bench.

That’s a fair point John, he is good with his head and we do need a John Carew type player for when we need to change things up, Davis could be that player in 2 seasons time but he needs a season or 2 playing every week before he is valuable asset to us imo, in the mean time mitrovic could be useful if he was going pretty cheap.

Ings is not the solution for Villa and vice versa, I think he will end up staying at Southampton. I think Abraham is a big shout if Smith is thinking about playing two strikers or shifting Olly out wide, other than that I think he will try Westley then look again in January 22 if it doesn't work. In the meantime let's hope we add one or two quality signings in other positions to improve us further and show Jack the next level of ambition.
