I know you will all think me stupid!
But glen Johnson as well Micah Richards both released by respective clubs.

Wouldn't both be worth a shout, 100% better than we have, both experienced and would solve our full back dilemma.
(I know both right footed, but I'm sure Richards played on left for citeh)

Micah Richards could be used at CB too. The only issue I can see is the wages.

Richards is a no brainer for me; powerful, quick, brave and a Villa fan to boot.
Would snap him up as a centre back and not bother offering Vlaar a new deal
The bloke reckons he can go a step higher than us ?
I'd contend he's not good enough
Concrete Ron ? Before it's set maybe.

Can't see the point in trying to improve on an injury-ridden Vlaar to get someone who spends even more time on the sidelines injured in Micah Richards.

Didn't even think of it like that. That's a great shout

Not sure of what his injury record has been at Fiorentina this year
Worth checking out if we were to make a move, obviously.

I agree with Mendex.
Vlaar www never world class at villa. Had glimpses of brilliance, but in the main never set the world on fire.

Richards has had his fair share of injuries, but to be fair, reading through, they are mainly muscle injuries, which suggests, if managed correctly, no long term damage, like for example with ligament or tendon.

Wanting to play for a club, to me, is half the battle, if it's true, and he is a fan, would probably get that extra 20% out of him, as it would mean more.
For me, vlaar saw us as a stepping stone, and is always looking for a way out.

{Ed001's Note - just one thing on Richards, one of his managers, I think it was Mancini if I remember correctly, said of him that he was the last on the training ground and first back in the changing rooms every session. That is why his career nosedived at Man City, his attitude stinks.}

Bloody hell ed, you truly are a shining light in the gloom that is this forum!! ;)

Maybe its we shouldn't judge him too harshly for this. He's never had a sniff of first team football since they bought Zabaletta and after years of knowing you aren't getting picked why would you try your hardest in training? Maybe a move to a club he supports where first team football is a very strong possibility will totally change his attitude.

He's not a Villa fan. Although born here he went off to Leeds aged about 1 or something. His only ties to the city are his birth.

Oh dear Peter, you best let him know that.
He has always said villa are his team, obviously he should of spoke to you first, you know more about his mind than he does

After he scored at Villa Park in the FA Cup a good few years ago he was asked and said he didn't support Villa. Don't really need to ask him when he's already said it. If he's changed his mind then fair enough but I'm only going on what he said and not what the papers say.

This is directly from an article in the Telegraph dated 9th October 2007 and the quotation marks kind of make me think its him speaking:

Richards, who was born in Birmingham and grew up in Leeds, said: "I was a big Ian Wright fan when I was younger, so I supported Arsenal.
"Wright and Patrick Vieira were my idols so if the opportunity came to play for them one day I'd take it.

But hey Flackie if you still want me to tell him he's a Villa fan I'll see what I can do.
