Managers have their favourites and the others will only play if there is an injury or fatigue regardless of form.

That’s the whole point of having depth in your squad, having another good player to step in when there’s an injury, if you don’t understand that then it’s probably you that knows nothing about football, if we have designs on challenging the top 6 then we need a solid replacement for every position and that’s what people have being arguing, he’s under contract so no need to loan him out and especially to a rival who look like now finishing ahead of us if I’m honest.

Good players yes but like I've argued before you don't get class backup unless you're in the Champions League.
Who outside Chelsea and City have 2 left backs that good?
Targett is in the top 10 left backs, we're not even in the top 10.
If we didn't loan him out we'd have got a lot less for him in the summer. Look at most of the top teams and even they struggle to keep top players who are on the bench every week.
It will probably become a choice in the summer of dropping the Coutinho deal and sticking with Buendia or signing Phil and losing Buendia within a year.
Gerrard says they can play together but we've proven his 2 10s system doesn't work whereas 2 strikers does. Emi us younger than Phil and although he can't match Phil for vision he is a better all rounder and has more time to improve.

Targett is a good player but to say he’s class is a huge stretch, I can’t see how not loaning him would of lowered his transfer fee that much and as I said our ambition is to break into Europe and you don’t do that with young as backup, ambition costs money so if it had of cost us a million or 2 on his transfer fee then so be it that’s the cost of success, andy Robertson was rested last night and Liverpool had sufficient cover for him, I would say every team above us has better cover at LB than we have with young.
I agree on the couthinho/Buendia situation I’d keep Buendia all day long, plus maginn can play that position if we need cover

I agree we need better than Young but while I'm not saying Targett is top class he's still one of the better left backs in the league.
Tsimikas was pretty poor defensively last night and I wouldn't say he's better than Targett so even a team challenging for the title doesn't have cover at that level.

Poor or not he was well sufficient to keep us at bay, most of our chances came through the center, so that’s not saying much for our right sided players.
I do agree that it would of being hard to keep him in the summer but there was no pressure on us to let him go in January, keeping him for the second part of the season would of given digne a chance to bed in, covered him when injured which was quiet often and someone to push him for his place and not let him rest on his laurels.
