Despite the rumours of a significant war chest being available to Gerrard in January I read an interesting article on Birmingham live from Kevin Maguire which suggests that Villa only have approximately £5 million available to spend as if they go above this figure they are likely to fall foul of FFP regs which I have to say I hadn't anticipated as being a problem as I thought FFP was not currently in effect, but if it is and Maguire is right then we may end up having to make do with what we have until the summer when the Grealish money goes through the accounts and our financial situation eases somewhat.

I can't see Gerrard coming with only 5M to spend in January, unless we have sales lined up - To be honest we don't need major surgery, a defensive midfielder is a must and (assuming there is no agreement to the contrary) that's got Kamara written all over it which I doubt would cost is the world. It'll be interesting to see, I don't really understand FFP and won't pretend to but i'm sure the club have plans in place to strengthen.

We have spent about £60 million since our £100 million windfall, so I think £40 million must be available one way or another.

I hope you are right, but if memory serves me right from other fractious debates we have had on this site re all things FFP, the ability to spend is in crude terms linked to turnover and sales ie when the cash flows through the accounts ( I am sure if this is wrong or too simplistic one of the Ed’s will put me right ) that being the case we won’t be able to benefit from the Grealish sale until the next summer’s transfer window, but as you say it’s difficult to imagine Gerrard coming with limited funds being available, however the one thing we want to ensure is we don’t fall foul of the rules and end up with a points deduction a la Derby.

I think we were in the red before we sold grealish though, still I think the owners will back him in January as they didn’t go mad in the summer spending like other years that we had nothing coming in from sales
