VVV Venlo chairman Hai Berden has admitted that Maya Yoshida was on Aston Villa's radar before Ron Vlaar's move was finalised, and believes the defender is ready to join a bigger club.

Yoshida, who is currently captaining Japan's Olympic squad, has earned rave reviews for his performances in the Eredivisie over the past couple of years.

Berden says it looked like he could have been on his way to Villa when Vlaar's switch to the Midlands from Feyenoord briefly appeared to have collapsed.

Believable3 Unbelievable3

Thats a shame I'd want him at villa too.

Clark, Vlaar, Yoshida, Dunne and loan baker out to championship team

Aston Villa linked with Schalke player Anthony Annan

The 26-year-old is a combative centre midfielder

And would add further steal to the midfield giving Villa El Ahmadi,Delph and Annan as the combative midfield

Believable6 Unbelievable7

El Hamadi and Annan would be a creat midfield pair with either two strikers or a striker and ireland in front on them

Agree1 Disagree9

Ireland won't get in.

Agree4 Disagree17

You wanna bet the money hes on

Agree11 Disagree1

Steel? He's a 5"7 playmaker.

Agree1 Disagree11

Annan could be the next Makelele, only playing for us!!

Agree1 Disagree10

Next makelele? Haha. No he's more like reo-coker only better on the ball

Agree10 Disagree1

Hes a defensive mid

Carnt belive forest done us 3-1, all these dreamers are Gunna have to wake up cus we ain't goin top ten unless we can build the lads confidence, we drew more games than anybody last year, winning won't be as easy as everybody thinks this year.

Believable6 Unbelievable11

Oh no we lost a friendly to forest it's the end of the world, we are gonna get relegated, lads confidence is low. Your the kind of Villa fan we can do without, doom monger!

Agree14 Disagree3

Always one downer ... its the 1st friendly we've lost + we tried out new tactics today

Agree11 Disagree2

Maybe i am just getting old but i am sure us Villa fans (or so called fans) are the most fickle. It was those fickle fools that got rid of Houllier when he was trying to play football with MON's donkeys and what happened they got him out and that Scot came in. Now our season is over two weeks before kick off. Support the club or stay away.

Agree14 Disagree1

No, a realist. If a prem side has a confidence problem this close to the start of the season then there are problems. These guys are on pay that would enable all of us to change our lives for ever and they are short of confidence. Utter b-ll-cks!!!

Agree3 Disagree11

Here we go - the moaning has started already. One defeat in a pre season friendly and the whining starts. Its just a pre season friendly that all. Yes it is nice to win but as Lambert has said before even a ball was kicked, its about getting the lads up to fitness, assessing what he has got and trying tactics. Stop moaning after one loss in a pre season - just remember what we had last year and be thankfull. Up the Villa.

Agree11 Disagree1

Pre season is all about building fitness and for a new gaffer trying different formations and tactics. This loss means nothing get a grip.

Up the villa!

Agree10 Disagree0

I posted this because we have delusional fans that are claiming we have a chance of a top 6 finish, wake up and smell the coffee!

Agree3 Disagree11

I havnt seen any1 write that with the current squad we can get top 6! With 3 quality signings ie A. Johnson. Defoe. Olsson then yes maybe. The most we should expect with the current squad is top 10 an that will be difficult as it is. >scg87

Agree13 Disagree0

Realistically there are 7-8 teams better than the villa, so we are going to have to raise our game before we take on the likes of city united arsenal Tottenham Chelsea newcastle Everton and Liverpool.

Agree10 Disagree1

Man city lost to oldham they must be getting relegated too! LOL get a grip and realise frendlies aren't important!!

Agree8 Disagree2

Chelsea lost to brighton they will be joining city in division 1 next aswell

Agree6 Disagree1

Dreamers, difference between us, Chelsea and city is they still have players out from the euro's, but the only guys that went out of the villa squad was Dunne and given. Doom gloomers with there sarcastic arm chair views, be nice to see u up villa park for once

Agree0 Disagree5

You must be a bluenose if u are proud of villa loosing, wether it be a friendly or a premier league game, you do want to win so don't kid yourself the "oh its only a friendly" that we shouldn't have lost

Agree0 Disagree9

We shouldn't have lost to forest but like Paul Lambert has said let's not dwell on this result and move on, good luck against werde Bremen lads

Anybody think it'd be worth putting in for frimpong from arsenal (loan or perm). Def think we'd be able to get one of either Sturridge, lukaka, guidetti. Would like to see A.Johnson from city, reckon its possible with the amount of midfielders they've got, if not him then one of the others. Or Huddlestone from spurs...I've always rated him and always wanted him at villa. What you guys think?

Believable7 Unbelievable15

Deffo love to see sturridge and either frimpong on huddlestone at villa. Not sure bout johnson tbh

Agree2 Disagree5

Can't stand frimpong the bloke does my head in. Petrov taught him a lesson last year

Agree6 Disagree8

I reckon if we got adam johnson and scott sinclair we would be challenging for top 6 again. Those 2 players would give us the attacking flair that villa have been missing over the past 2 seasons. UTV.

Agree8 Disagree8

Arsenal will only loan frimpong out if he's guerenteed to start games an i personally wouldnt pick him ahead of Karim, Ireland or Bannan so i dont see any point in going for him.

Sturridge an A. Johnson would be a great signings an Lukaku an Huddleston would be good signings my only concern with Huddleston is his injury record over the last 2 years an he wouldnt come cheap.

But with spurs on the verge of signing Damiao i reckon we should make a serious move for Defoe! AVB usually plays 1 striker so surely that means Defoe will leave. >scg87

Agree17 Disagree1

Unless Makoun can't play why on earth would we need another CM

Agree8 Disagree1

Rated THUD for many years. Did he go from Derby to Spuds? MON tried to get him I am led to believe. Could add to shots on target but not sure about being consructive.

Agree2 Disagree3

We are crying out for a goal scorer-please randy put your hand in your pocket, and get us one!

Agree5 Disagree2

We've got a goal scorer what we need is someone to supply him with the ball!

Dave80

Agree1 Disagree0

Personally dont want defoe, i know hes a goalscorer but think hes just a bit too greedy at times and his age and wages are to the wrong side of what we want. think sturridge would be a much better option. would also like either sinclair or a johnson, both young pacy and skillful and like to take men on. think sinclair would ask for less in wages so could be our new a young as long as we dont sell him when we make him better. last signing i would like is ryan shawcross, might take a couple of ££££ but think hes a superb cb. we could then play clark at lb where i thought he was pretty decent when houllier tryed him there

Agree2 Disagree12

Last time i heard defoe was going to reading and any rumors of simpson

Agree0 Disagree9

Defoe might be 29/30 but at £8m he would be a bargain! How many strikers in world football can you get for £8m ish who guarentee 15-20 goals a season?! look at the price's quoted for Fletcher £10m-15m, Rhodes £6m an Hooper £6m, there's no guarentee's with them, Defoe has atleast 2 more seasons at his current level an guarentee's 15-20 goals a season if defoe scores 30 prem goals in the next 2 seasons then that would be money well spent! His age an re-sale value is irelevant!
Defoe would also give us flair an the ability to create chances for himself which would be a great asset when our midfielders are not creating chances. >scg87 {Ed007's Note - I don't know what makes you think Defoe guarantees 15-20 goals a season SCG, he has only scored over 15 goals in five seasons out of the 12 he has been playing and over 20 goals twice out of the five. He is nowhere near as prolific as people make out.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Ed, im interested to know what you consider to be prolific? The stats ive seen say defoe has scored 150 odd goals in 400 games, thats prolific to me! an keeping in mind for the first 5 years of his career he was playing at struggling clubs or atleast clubs who were fighting relegation at times. Defoes record at spurs in prem 79 goals in 220 games, looks ok to me. Last season he scored 11 goals in 25 prem games an considering he spent most of the season coming off the bench for the last 20mins thats impressive. An correct me if im wrong ed but defoe was also injured for 2 months last season. So you tell us ed, how many strikers could we sign with defoe's record at £8million (reported £8m)?

Another thing id like to point out is, look at the other strikers we've been linked with, Fletcher £12m thats what sunderland have offered, is he worth that? Looking at his record id say no! Rhodes £6m good goal scoring record but not at a high level so would be a gamble! Gouffran, is he even a ST? Not from what ive seen, he would also be a gamble! Defoe i dont see him as a gamble. >scg87 {Ed007's Note - Prolific to me is someone who can score 15+ goals a season, every season. The season before last he scored 4 goals in 22 league matches, the 9th season out of his career he has failed to score 10 goals or more in the league. Overall he has made 298 appearances for Spurs and scored 118 goals, it's a toss up between Defoe and Crouch to see who is the worst striker in or around the England squad.}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed, i dont know crouch's record but im pretty sure its no where near defoe's 118 goals in 298 games at spurs almost 1 in 2 by my math, 30 odd goals off. Ed Have you got any ideas as to who would be a better buy than defoe who AV could realistically get? >scg87 {Ed043's Note - i cant see us signing these players but see lambert looking out of the prem such as rhodes or possibly outside england but as for who im not to sure}

Agree0 Disagree0

Ed, How strikers have scored more goals than defoe? Not many! An the ones who have, with the exception on shearer have scored all there goals at big clubs who are competing for the league with 'great players' creating there goals ie henry,
v. Nistelrooy, rooney, rvp, drogba, torres.
Who could AV get who would be better than defoe?? {Ed043's Note - there are not many if any but i doubt he will come to us because the clubs he plays for all are in the south or in london so i doubt for personal reasons he would want to leave spurs}

Apparently us and Sunderland have made enquires regarding the availability of Adam Johnson.
