I can't help but ask "why did Bruce fail to get these players to perform? "
Most of the players were bought to the club while he was manager but nearly all failed to respond. Our style has changed from defending at all costs to attack and attack.
I love watching after the way the team performed early in the season.
Well done Dean Smith.
You have woken a sleeping giant.
Thank you sir.
The oldvillan.

Did not work for Bruce because he is a manager who's first thought is to defend and hope to a chance to win.
Smith just goes for it home and away,
Very simply really bruce is a dinosaur.

2.) 02 Dec 2018 14:54:10
I think for a start playing Tuanzebe at CB, which is where he played pre-season.
Bolasie has only recently got himself fit.
And playing attacking football with an attacking team.

3.) 02 Dec 2018 19:05:29
Oldvillan, surely the answer to that is very simple, most on here have spoken about players being played out of position, and only having one system. "negativity"
Can`t we forget about the bloke, he gave us a degree of stability, and now he has gone.

4.) 03 Dec 2018 14:59:30
Dave none of us should forget, owners need to understand that there is no place in modern football for the likes of Bruce, mad mick, puliss, Hughes, Big Sam, moyes, keeping on reminding fans of these guys failings may just save other clubs from the dross that these so called experienced managers dish up. Good news is message is getting through not many of the aforementioned are currently employed in league football.

5.) 03 Dec 2018 15:08:27
Good we need more managers like southgate, deano, howe, h8 too say wolves manager, klopp, n poch.

6.) 03 Dec 2018 16:29:50
I agree with your theory scotcaffu, the fact is it won't be me reminding them about out of touch managers,
Other clubs can have that type of manager with pleasure if they want.
Bruce has gone, and I could not be more pleased.

7.) 08 Dec 2018 09:49:12
I was trying to consider how Bruce would have set up for games away to boro and WBA. It makes it clear why he failed. I predict this could be close to his selection.
Nyland
Rb tuanzebe
Cb Chester
Cb Jedi / bree
Lb Hutton
Rm Elmo
Cdm Whelen
Cm hourihane
Lm kodja
Am Grealish
St Abraham

Subs bolasie, hogan, bla bla bla

So little creativity. Compare that to smiths selwction. Admittedly he has less injuries to contend with and bolasie was always going to take time. But I also believe smith would not have loaned out elphick or green. All if’s, but’s and maybe’s but it’s fairly easy so see why Bruce failed.

Many of my friends are Charlton supporters and they are saying Jedi Steer is coming back n January.

Maupay 3 game ban but they can't alter the result.
Second time we have been shafted by inefficient ref.
Who was the guy who got away with a similar act on Grealish at Weobley?
Score could have been different.
Can't the ref etc be sued for being useless?
Sue them for the loss of £160m which ended up creating our money problems during the summer.
Any barrack room lawyers out there?

Theoldvillan

1.) 23 Aug 2018 18:02:29
With all due respect Oldvillan, the ref was/ is not the cause of our money problems.
That honour is placed firmly at the Doctors feet, no question.

2.) 23 Aug 2018 19:02:21
Retrospective action may not help the result but a good way to look at it is that a potential rival are now missing their main goalscorer for 3 matches.

06 Aug 2018 21:51:05
Average performance, lacking flair.
We must give better performances because other sides will not be as generous.
Result is what matters but style is important.
Hope we get some exciting players in someone that can change a game.

Theoldvillan

1.) 07 Aug 2018 00:11:50
With the team missing several of last seasons players and no replacements yet in the squad we were obviously fielding a team far weaker than last season.

The performance reflected that but the result for Bruce and the team was a fantastic one given that fact, yielding that all important 3 points which is our best start since relegation. With fresh additions coming to the squad on a regular basis right up until the 31st August then the squad will only improve with time, especially with the exciting young players now being sought by Bruce and agents. Keep up the great work Bruce and although difficult keep collecting those early points which come September could leave us sitting in a very strong position. UTV.

2.) 07 Aug 2018 06:50:08
Considering we struggled to pass the ball 5 yards at times last season I thought there were some decent interchanges.
The ball wasn't bouncing off Jimmy as much as pre season although he still needs to be less selfish.
Defending is still an issue. We were lucky not to concede 3 or 4.
Not a fan of Taylor but he had by far his best game in a Villa shirt. Must have taken tips from Hutton with some of the runs he was making.

01 Aug 2018 08:29:11
Could Spuds be losing interest in Super Jack?
Story is that they are ready to go for Zaha for £45m, cut price deal.
Playing hard ball with Levy may well have worked.

Theoldvillan

1.) 01 Aug 2018 08:33:40
Think you will find levy will come back last day of window and try to still get him on cheap,
He does this time and again so I think,

2.) 01 Aug 2018 09:54:29
New owners will look like clueless mugs if they sell for a penny less than 30 mil. Just can't see it happening .

Who left the barn door open?
Our porous defence were left standing after we gave balls away.
Sorry, but Chester is not at his best, He played on the right with JT and looks lost on the left with the other weak area.
TZ is a man mountain, capable of bringing the ball out from the back but that leaves Chester on his own and he cannot play as a single.
We could all write a list of what we need but top of my list is another C/ H.

Theoldvillan

1.) 29 Nov 2018 17:51:27
Like I said in my previous post, we already knew about our defensive problems but very little can be done until the transfer window opens.

10 Nov 2018 22:48:05
Great result today.
Players playing in positions that they clearly understand.
If only SB had really gone back to basics where could we have been?
Let us hope that we can continue in the same vein and get into the play offs or even the automatic slots.
I am very hopeful of the future.

Theoldvillan

1.) 11 Nov 2018 08:44:28
SB was too basic. That was the whole problem.
Could you imagine him ever talking about setting traps for the opposition?

2.) 11 Nov 2018 14:09:24
I vowed I would not talk about SB any more, but.
I have to say oldvillan I think SB was a basic manager anyway, and is very limited in many ways.
I don’t think he has or had any other way of setting his teams up, and he was totally clueless when it came to technical and tactical awareness.
He stabilised the club agreed, and I thank him for that, but you can only tread water for so long, and that is what we were doing, and we were getting very tired.

3.) 12 Nov 2018 09:05:03
Don't know what you think Dave but do our players look fitter since Smith came in?
There seems more energy in our play.
Or is it they like how Smith sets his team's to attack more!
They do seem more happy in there mistermeaner.

09 Nov 2018 15:26:03
Dave I have it.
You have ŕaided your other half's purse. All that small change was put away for a rainy day but you little rascal you found it.
Well done.

I t Tt was all abouthink that the majority of supporters would identify with opinions that we need another c/ b urgently.
Should Smith look at the out of contract players and bring an "arse kicker " in asap.
Chester looks lost without JT while TZ looks better every game.
My arse kicker is not all about opponents it is also aimed at our players.
Most of us watch Sky games and can't fail to see that the top teams use the ball quicker and hit the ball harder when passing so the ball gets to the receiver.
Looking round our team one sees players standing waiting for the ball, failing to note themselves being closed down. Result the ball is intercepted and we are again defending from an attacking position.
Some players seem to stand still rather than running into space to receive a pass.
We are slow to see a pass, slow making the pass, slow waiting for the pass.
Bruce bought Hogan from the Bees but failed to supply him with the ball in the box which is what the Guy is all about.
Let's get players playing to thier strengths, not adapting to some pattern layed out On.

Dean Smith has a huge problem.
The way we played tonight was straight from the SB handbook.
How many under hit passes can a team make during a game?
Some players must question there performance and on evidence we have an enormous journey.
I am not sure that Chester is doing enough to be the c/ h that we need. Last year he had Terry with him but this season he should be the leader on the pitch, but is he? Whelan was busy, but, regular short passes that put others in trouble.
Much work to be done by Smith for us to get up the table.
Sorry guys, not getting at Smith more sympathising with him as the players are letting him down, badly!

Theoldvillan

1.) 23 Oct 2018 22:25:21
He is less than a week into job in terms of time with players. We all know this team requires a lot of work so fans need to keep off the managers and the teams back and let them work. January can't come quick enough for me.

All of them.
We need any players that can stand up.
Our owner has dropped us deep in the veritable.
How the mighty are falling due to the incompetence of our management.
Even I have sorted out my boots, haven't been seen for 60 years, but if I'm needed I am ready.
Dodgy knees, stiff ankles and little balance.
I'll even pay for the privalege.

I posted that we had the squad that was well able to get promoted several weeks ago when many were wailing at the gates of despare.
All it will take is a change of approach by our manager.
You can get a good price at the bookies.

Because of the situation we have to look at options and a rename of Villa Park would be acceptable.
Should it happen then I would want to see it still named "***********Villa Park. "
However beggars can't be choosers and what a sponsor wanuts.

Deadly was selling to the Dr.
After the process yes, he sold to the Dr.
The essence of the post is to question the Dr's ability to actually buy AVFC with his own money.
It does seem that he does not have the ready cash as it stands at this momen t.

Many posters asked the same question when it was announced that Deadly was selling to the Dr.
No body seemed able to answer and I would hazard a guess that there will not be an answer forthcoming.
Some years back Man U were "sold" to a geezer who worked on the idea that he could pay off the buying price by monthly payments. In the end he went off to a northern club and may still be there.
Many business's are bought on the expected turnover to come so the Dr has not invented anything new.
What is going on suggests that the Dr has limited wealth and unfortunately we were told this by supporters of other clubs at the time of the change.
What is happening does make me think that the Dr is not what we thought originally, if he was he should be able to rake out the £40m that we need!

In the prem the ref would have blown for a full on the GK.
He could have blown for handball when Rodriguez first got to the ball after charging thro the GK, then again when he lay on the floor.
As you point out ref STD in the champs is awful.

Many of them are not earning their pay.
Grealish, Chester to name two and they were both seen as transfer targets.
Mcginn is the driving force and his play suits that of our Viking.
Whelan should be on his bike and Jedinak is lost.
Dean Smith has a challenge much larger than he anticipated.
Super stars in their own eyes but not on the pitch.
I so want him to do the job and hope the players respond. If they don't then dump them somewhere cold and wet so they can see how well they are looked after at our AVFC.
