after climbing to a mighty and well deserved 3rd in the table mean lambert is a decent manager after all?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

You are joking, right?

Agree1 Disagree0

How about some rejoicing in a good start to 2014/15? It doesn't mean that we are now top 6, but there are 17 clubs below us and some of them are happy to be in the prem. PL hasn't changed but some experience is now in the team. Let us go with the team and stop all the carping. I doubt that we are going to stay where we are but we are 3 rd at present and no one expected that. Yes we have top teams to play but for the present we are 3rd. Let all the miserable sods who never see a half full glass look for hope.

Agree1 Disagree0

Making judgements after 3 games, one way or another, is clearly ridiculous. Let's all calm down and see where we are after 8 or 10 games.
Believe it or not, those who don't like Lambert still love the team and are pretty damn happy when they win.

Agree0 Disagree1

Mendax is right, making judgements after only 3 games is ridiculous, but then so is making judgements after 8 games bearing in mind our next 5 fixtures. We will do well to pick up anything at all from those games. Therefore we need to stay patient, accept that the next few games are going to be difficult and stay behind the team. We are likely to be closer to the bottom of the table than the top by the end of October. A more realistic time to assess where we are likely to finish the season would be end of November. I for one am encouraged to think we will do better than last year as it looks as though we will be harder to score against than last year but that will be tested in the coming games

Agree2 Disagree0

No judgement made, indeed a cautionary note made, so not ridiculous.
Lets be happy that we have made a good start.
Many it seems expected the worst and yes as stated we have the top boys to play SOON.
Many are delighted that 7 from 9 is better than 17 other clubs.
Try to be happy rather than doubting, it does help one exist.

Agree2 Disagree1

Sorry Oldvillain, I just do not really know why or how we are even talking about this
Let's move on to something more interesting

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Aug 2014 20:32:26
villa move for cleverly on the rocks over wage £of 70,000 per week; obviously clubs are trying to hold the club to ransom and show it matters not one jot if their greed, will interfere with their ability to buy armani' new clothes range or the new aston martn, tell that to a guy with a mortgage abd a fanily to support on £80 a week. footballers are greed y persons with neither integrity or any affinity with those whose pennies at the gate pay most of their obscene lifestyles

Believable1 Unbelievable0

So your saying if another company came and asked you to work for them, and really wanted you you wouldn't hold out for the best wages??

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Aug 2014 19:43:37
very slowly i'm starting to get proper annoyed at our team now. i'm seeing few decent names moving either on loan or signing for teams that in theory are lesser teams than we are that would really help us. now I don't know if this is a case of money or if its a case of we not even bothered or we just not allowed to sign players that cost a certain amount but its really getting on my wick now,

the main the candidate for this is song going west ham on loan, did we even look at him?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Agreed mate.
I was gutted to hear about Song
A player who could transform our midfield
I just hope the Cleverley deal does fall through and we have to look elsewhere

Agree2 Disagree0

I mean we could sit here and reel of half a dozen transfers that have been done or possible transfers/loans and where they may not be the world class players we all want they would at least stop the rot for a few years and then we grow from there. cleverly I think is one the most over rated players in the prem but I think he will do the job for us.

Agree0 Disagree1

30 Aug 2014 17:34:28
Posted on Twitter :
"Paul Lambert is currently undergoing a medical at Aston Villa after agreeing to spend £8million on Tom Cleverley"

Believable2 Unbelievable1

{Ed030's Note - You certainly could have got a more talented player for that transfer fee and half the wages from abroad, Cleverly certainly isn't worth anywhere near £8m I don't think. }

I put this response on the rumours page and others disagree. For this sort of money PL could have got a choice of a lot of class players. A buy like this could be a stroke of genius or the worst foley that he has made.

Agree1 Disagree0

Word has it lambert failed the medical, failed on common sense test

Agree1 Disagree0

I hate to agree ED but I think this is madness
Kagawa for 8 mill would have been worth the risk

Agree0 Disagree0

I think we know which of those is most likely Oldvillain
I'm not a fan of Lambert (does it show) and think he has largely shown poor judgement in the transfer market. But, even I was still baffled by this move
A lot of his dreadful buys (Bennett, KEA, Luna etc) have been explained away by Lambert supporters as understandable due to the budgetary constraints imposed by Lerner. Here, he has been given some decent dough and seems determined to waste it

Agree0 Disagree0

30 Aug 2014 15:14:55
where is the money coming from for sanchez, cleverly (I hope)?do we have a new pot?rumours in liverpoll saying villa want shamus coleman from everton-which will NOT happen. shoul dn't we know or be told, if there is dosh available what fool is letting lamberk spend I, t we could end up playing eleven luna's!!

Believable2 Unbelievable0

29 Aug 2014 15:11:22
the villa bid for tom cleverly is 7m fingers crossed, eh ed?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

I would take welbeck aswell

Agree0 Disagree0

Some are suggesting we cannot afford his wages. Maybe better than what we have but still a fairly average player and we cannot afford him!! Oh well, UTV and SOTC

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Aug 2014 11:40:08
ssn confirm bid for cleverly us or Valencia, playing at places like real or real may swing one way or the other, be nice to poach FROM them for a change

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We don't want failures, we want good players.
Cleverly is not right for AVFC.

Agree1 Disagree2

28 Aug 2014 20:42:41
If we take cleverley would nt we do better in trying to get Remy and a winger, Remy is proven goalscorer and without much width a winger is a must

Believable1 Unbelievable0

28 Aug 2014 20:12:02
So we have had a bid accepted for Tom Cleverley. I'm not saying that he is a bad player because I think he does have some good qualities and he is better than some of the midfielders we currently have. But £8 million for him? That is a lot of money for someone who has been injured the last couple of seasons. I think that the £8 million could of been spent on a different player. But you never know he may prove me wrong and end up being worth loads and becoming an England regular.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

28 Aug 2014 22:38:41
Yeah agree 8 mill is a lot. However when you see price of players. Livermere was 8 million and Shane long 12 it's what price you pay for half decent players

Agree0 Disagree1

Imagine we could go back to yesterday and imagine I asked the question " what do you think of Cleverley at Man United? "
I doubt many would respond with "he's quality. Would be a snip at 8 million"
Put it in perspective. Alonso has just signed at Bayern for 5 million

Agree1 Disagree0

You're right Mendax, Alonso "seems" a bargain, but £5m doesn't tell the whole story. Can you imagine Alonso's wages compared to Tom Cleverley? I'd guess Alonso's wages are probably 5 if not 6 times those of TC. I think we have to consider what a particular package cost is of a player. It's not transfer fees that kill a club, it's the wages.

Agree0 Disagree0

29 Aug 2014 16:29:09
Agreed Dru, but let's face it. With regard to the cost of Alonso, we'd have a 3 million quid headstart
However you cut it, Cleverly at 8 million is a bad buy

Agree1 Disagree0

Again Mendax you sum up the situation perfectly.
We need a thoroughbred not a workhorse.

Agree1 Disagree0

28 Aug 2014 17:03:49
Cleverly would be a good signing, he's 10x better than Sylla and El Ahamdi, so can all deluded fans be quiet and get behind the player and support him

Believable1 Unbelievable1

28 Aug 2014 15:52:22
Thoughts on the supposed 8mil bid for Cleverley? Only a Telegraph rumour but something to take our minds away from last night.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

28 Aug 2014 15:45:23
2 month ago I told you all tom cleverley is coming to aston villa you all said this wasn't true I don't lie villa have bid 8 million for him so iam here to tell u I told u so

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Yeah, thanks for that Mike.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Aug 2014 08:11:21
Ok people with benteke out who gna get goals I no for shure it want be bent pice s*** and we wudnt even get half the money bk for him just sack him bring bk that young dutch striker last pre season smashed it then did get a chance

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Say what? Love it how people forget he saved us the season we bought him. his goals kept us up. he hasn't been given games to get him back to match fitness and didn't he score a couple in pre season

Agree0 Disagree0

Bent "saving us" is ancient history and not even factually correct. Football is a team game, remember?
Regardless, Bent's powers have dipped dramatically since then. He doesn't get game time here or didn't at Fulham because when he does he shows nothing
No room for sentiment in football. We need him gone and a worthy replacement brought in

Agree0 Disagree0

Him and Gabby and Wiemann and. so on and so on!

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Aug 2014 14:27:56
I am hoping that we see Joe Cole start tonight against the 'o's. It is an opportunity for us to see what he could offer. 32 is no age, most of us don't grow up till we are 30, so Joe is in the right age group. PL could have a prize asset for nothing. We need someone to make the ball work so that players get the ball as opposed to running aimlessly around looking for the damn thing. C'mon Joe, light up b6!

Believable0 Unbelievable1

27 Aug 2014 16:11:11
Totally agree, hope bent starts and given because I think Guzan needs a bit of competition he still looks a bit shaky under high balls,

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Aug 2014 00:01:52
Wow. How many giant killings is that since lambert has been here. Let's hope we can keep up the league form ay.

Agree0 Disagree0

28 Aug 2014 18:03:12
How many managers would still have a job when they have broken every record for all the wrong reasons, I wish Doug was in charge PL would have been gone after Chesea

Agree1 Disagree0

I wouldn't argue with you mate
I suspect plenty will do though
Not sure how bad we have to get before Lambert is judged as a poor manager

Agree1 Disagree0

27 Aug 2014 10:39:07
So lambert says there will be more transfers before deadline day, I still think he will bring in Wes holahan and a striker I hope he has seen in the last 2 league games how bad gabby is,

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Hoolahan has only signed a new contract 20days ago

Agree0 Disagree0

27 Aug 2014 09:49:43
Gardner has potential from the past performances but has been unlucky with injury. He hasn't played for a very long time, He/We cannot expect him to walk back into the Villa side, he has to do what Grealish has done (Notts County) and re prove his abilities. PL has done the right thing by putting him with a young up and coming manager out of the spotlight and let him find his feet again. I wish him well as I think it's there but it's got to be nurtured again and his confidence has got to be built up and a spring put back in his step. Good luck GG fingers crossed.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

25 Aug 2014 18:40:11
Lads gabby needs to be dropped, bent and Hutton were dropped for less last season which gave them a kick up the back side and might do the same for him, he is not a forward in any way makes the wrong runs all the time I think he more of a winger, I was reading today Sunderland are going in for kalou with a 4 million bid I think we could be good for us proven in the prem never really got a chance with chealsky So my rant for today is drop gabby for a couple of games

Believable2 Unbelievable0

You must be a mind reader.

Agree2 Disagree0

25 Aug 2014 21:11:19
Completely agree about Gabby, i'd do the same to Weimann

Agree1 Disagree0

23 Aug 2014 23:37:49
Was it just me or was randy Lerner in the Chelsea crowd, sure I saw him celebrating hazards goal next to abromovich, can't make villa games though or is it for potential signing.

Believable0 Unbelievable1

We need a number 9, the shirt is empty and Chelski have a player to spare. Torres is available and could arrive if Chelski pay his wages.
Also Lerner could be networking to look for a buyer and calling for Romans assistance.
Only thinking out loud, but it is the last week of dealing.
Also Chelski even with the talent they have would like Big Ben in their camp and a loan of Torres could hasten any future deal.
Only thinking out loud!

Agree0 Disagree1

25 Aug 2014 21:14:34
If Torres can't score with the amount of chances Chelsea provide xan't see him setting the world a light at Villa, but you never know! Definiteley wouldn't swap Benteke for him though

Agree0 Disagree0

23 Aug 2014 14:36:38
Can't wait for Benteke to come back. Nothing going forward and Weimanns just not good enough to lead the line on his own. Otherwise solid defensive display.

Believable1 Unbelievable0

Sorry guys Gabby should go. He now does very little. How many efforts has he had on goal?
We need someone to attack defenders and take a shot not someone who runs into defenders and loses the ball.
I know that he is a fan favorite and Villa to the core but everything changes

Agree1 Disagree0

19 Aug 2014 15:25:42
We should sign Ben arfa. Obviously he's not in pardew's plans and he has that "edge"

Believable3 Unbelievable3

19 Aug 2014 10:25:19
Argentine midfielder Sebastian Blanco -- thoughts? don't know much about him.
AC

Believable1 Unbelievable1

He's an offensive midfielder. His two natural positions are right wing and central offensive midfielder, and he can be bought for less than £3 million according to what I read.

Agree4 Disagree1

18 Aug 2014 15:23:31
Does anyone think that we will sign Scott Sinclair as we have allegedly shown interest in the past and he has now been made available by city?

Believable0 Unbelievable1

Micah Richards, John Guidetti and Matija Nastasic also look to be on their way out of Manchester City according to ssn.

I think that Guidetti would be a great addition to the Villa squad.

Agree2 Disagree0

I would take all of them but it's just the wages of Natasic and Richards which we wouldn't be able to afford. They would all be great additions to the squad.

Agree1 Disagree0

Why the hell do so many people want us to sign Sinclair?
The man is absolute rubbish. We shouldn't touch him with a ten foot pole.
Clarrie Blue.

Agree1 Disagree2

18 Aug 2014 07:28:55
Looks as though Holtby could be available for £1.5m according to morning news. Would he be good for us or just another midfield player? We now have an enforcer in the middle and several workers and if Zog keeps going we may have enough invention. PL has some back up with Cole to change games etc. but we still wait for big Ben to come back and remember the 9 shirt is still empty. Has PL got a striker in mind?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Looks like Holtby will be heading to either QPR or Crystal Palace.

Agree0 Disagree0

17 Aug 2014 22:23:15
Mendex your starting to sound like the pundits, like as if you want us to lose I don't get it some off the supporters think this is a good squad why can't you just get on with it until after 15-20 games in and IF we are in a dog fight will then you can say I told you so, until then we have what we have and to me it's a whole lot better than last year

Believable0 Unbelievable2

Come of it Mick. You know better than that
As for me waiting for a few games, is that not what we should all be doing instead of getting carried away with one result?
It amazes me how easily Villa fans are so easily pleased these days
Lerner's biggest crime seems to be the extent to which he has reduced our expectations

Agree2 Disagree0

My expectations aren't reduced I just that we have lambert only had a small kitty, and I think he has done a decant job with what he has got in, we are not world beaters and we will struggle to beat the likes off hull and co, but I just reckon we have a lot of more strength and depth in the squad compared to previous season, we should get behind what we have and shout them on

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with the last bit there Mick
I don't know why anyone would think I would do anything than that to be honest
If we struggle to beat the likes of Hull we will struggle fullstop

Agree1 Disagree0

What I'm trying to say we will never go on a 5 or 6 game unbeaten run, I think we will pick up a lot more points at home than what we did last year, I think if we could pick up 9pts out say every 5 games I think would leave us mid table and I think this squad can do that compared to last season

Agree1 Disagree0

We won't be in a dog fight this year. All you have to do is look at our squad and you can see it is a mid table squad, teams like burnley, hull, west brom don't have a single high quality player, whereas we have 3 or 4. The spine of our team has European quality, with vlaar delph and benteke being the spine and we then have players like N'Zogbia, okore and Weiman around them who also have quality. Also the other glimmer of light is grealish who looks very sharp and lively and we can clearly see the difference Roy keane has made. He has played under the greatest two managers of all time so he should know what he is talking about. About the expectations being dropped, of course they have because no fool in the world would expect us to be challenging for the champions league which is what we were doing when lerner first come in but for current expectations its 12th or 13th for this season and then we should of had a takeover by then, and we just have to hope they are highly rich. We have to just become a bit more realistic for now and not expect record signings and high quality players We just need to except what we have

Agree1 Disagree1

17 Aug 2014 08:10:40
A Sunday paper states that KEA wants to go home. Do you think that PL should let him go?

Believable1 Unbelievable0

YES another bad buy probably loan no one daft enough to buy? not being pessimistic but let's wait a bit longer on the recent buys Luna had a great debut. we won at stoke far from pleasing on the eye, but some don't care how we win I like to see some flare

Agree1 Disagree0

The buys this year have decades of premier league experience between them which means we shouldn't have to ain't longer to see just how good they are. They perform at ther very very on Saturday and long may that continue

Villamate1

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2014 22:20:39
Ed can u tell me where okore was today. Great performance from the lads senderos, Richardson and cissokho were outstanding, grealish looked good when he was on, vlaar brilliant as usual. Need strikers back and we will be a complete team because Weiman and gabby aren't good enough. Great performance, Mendex you got anything to say?? ;)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

{Ed001's Note - no sorry I can't.}

Ermmm, if you insist. Wasn't at the game but obviously delighted with the result.
You are clearly a new Villa fan who is unaware of the start we made last season.
Welcome to the family my friend

Agree0 Disagree0

New villa fan? I've Ben supporting villa for 30 years. This year is different to last as we actually seem to have quality and some passion in the players and the players are proven, whereas last year the cheap foreign unproven imports had one good game which did get people carried away but as I say this year seems a bit different

Agree0 Disagree0

"This year is different"?
After one game?
Let's see where we are after 10

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Mendax, it is great to read so many people seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. I know where you are standing at present but we all "want" to believe. The current group do look better than the last two seasons with much more experience both on the pitch and on the bench, backed up with Roy Keane. Has PL been able to shake off Lerners development dream and with very little money built a team? It is not just 10/15 games down the line, it is the hope that we will not have our usual slump late season that has screwed us in the past years.

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you oldvillain
I just think it is a little premature to make grand pronouncements after one game

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2014 17:08:14
Not getting carried away here but we are a good side, still with Big Ben to come in but I reckon we will finish top half easy, Mr lambert has put a good squad together under the radar, still with 1 more transfer to come in I haven't a clue who it might be but I'm feeling very happy about this season solid performance and great work rate, Now come on the doom and gloom boys

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Great performance. Commentary on Gillette and during the game is really starting to get on my nerves though. On the BBC it said bojan was a stand out player when he did nothing. Stoke have spent very little this year and its genius gem finding when Hughes spends nothing but for villa who have spent just as much its all doom and gloom and not good enough. If you look at the two squads today I know which one I would prefer. And Charlie nichlolas on sky was saying after the game that villa beat arsenal last year but still struggled and it will be like that again and that stoke will still finish top half and be the best midlands team. For me, it is really starting to annoy me afterall what real high quality player do stoke have, they certainly don't have anyone as good as benteke delph and vlaar. Pundits never seem to have anything good to say about us and if you watch match of the day tonight I bet they spend very little time on villa because they always do. Rant over :)

Agree0 Disagree0

Hughes got Bojan from his contacts with his former club. No problem with the performance today and I don't care about the pundits views as they only watch the top 6 teams. I do remember some time back the experts stating that Villa had an average team that might have a cup run, but they didn't. All they won this particular season was the league championship! Experts and pundits, what do they know?

Agree0 Disagree0

I couldn't agree more, yes Bojan was a good signing but Senderos is more important for Villa than Bojan will be for Stoke, they have plenty of attacking midfielders/wingers, for example Ireland, Arnuatovic, Moses, Adam, Odemwingie. People need to realise PL has made a solid side, the defence looks 10x better than it did last season!

Agree0 Disagree0

16 Aug 2014 17:00:03
What a victory, the whole defence was solid, with Cissokho being the stand out player. Going forward we looked quicker and more direct, this is without Sanchez, Benteke and Bent playing. In Lambert we trust ( all his signings put great shifts in)

Believable0 Unbelievable0

15 Aug 2014 22:30:17
Looks like Victor Moses is off to stoke, another missed opertunaty.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

16 Aug 2014 14:54:13
cant believe Gardner not even on the Bench

Agree0 Disagree0

Sounded like a very hard fort victory. Well done to the villa boys. Fordy.

Agree0 Disagree0

15 Aug 2014 11:47:52
Shampton have signed Gedos? From Bucharest. does that make VLaar safe at VP?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

No, Van Gaal might look at taking him to United due to the lack of defenders he has avaiable.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Aug 2014 17:11:52
According to ssn Paul Lambert doesn't know if Ron Vlaar will still be at the club when the transfer window closes after being linked with a move to Southampton. Speaks volumes he knows full well big Rons going whether its to southampton or another club. So he won't be a villa player come end of august especially as lambert hasn't spoken to him about a new contract.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Not exactly something new to us! remember alpay olzan. hope he stays though!

Agree0 Disagree0

Vlaar may not want to leave but if his agent has set up a deal he will go. Agents are a curse on football. They turn even the average player into someone who believes he is the missing cog in a teams plans. Either that or " I have done a deal to double/treble your pay" this means that the present club will have to up the pay if they want to keep the player or just let them go. Allay was a perfect example.

Agree0 Disagree0

13 Aug 2014 09:24:32
Looking forward to season to kick off I think Paul lambert has a pretty good squad to pick from, don't get me wrong we won't win the league or anything, but I don't think we will be in a dog fight either, no more excuses for the manger now about kids and a lack of experience, lastly I'm reading spuds want to off load Lennon I think we could do a job for us have been linked with him before

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Great post! And I totally agree! I think under the radar lambert has created a useful squad.
Hopefully the last few seasons will have them playing together. Nothing like a s*** fight to bond a young team.
Lennon would be a great signing for us.
Although, I seriously feel another striker is needed, and a new back up keeper.!

Nick

Agree0 Disagree0

I also agree, I think we have a decent squad compared to seasons gone by, we seem to have 2 players for every position and also benteke and kozac to come in. The squad does have premiership quality now, it may not be the top end of quality but it is a premiership squad now.

Agree0 Disagree0

1 good forward
1 decent midfielder
1 OK central defender (based on 2 years in the prem, not 5 games in Brazil)
No decent fullbacks
1 promising winger
Decent Squad??

Agree0 Disagree0

Mendax why not be positive for gods sake yes not best squad but get behind lambert and boys it is decent squad now so less negative attitude and be more positive

Agree0 Disagree0

As odd ball would say what's with the negative vibes man have a little fath

Agree0 Disagree0

I'll be positive about the team when there is something to generate such a response (the performance on Saturday won't do it)
I won't be "positive" just because you tell me to be.
Equally, I will have the courtesy to not tell you how to feel.
Try to convince me you are right in your optimism rather than trying to browbeat me in to compliance with your view

Agree0 Disagree0

Mendax, I think the general point is that our squad looks stronger this season and there is cause for some optimism. Personally I'm looking forwards to seeing vlaar and okore playing together and feel that could be a strong pairing. hutton seems up for it, nzogbia is capable of magic and bent is a differnet option for us if needed. all players who for whatever reasons didn't play last season. but they do improve our squad and give us depth. Last season we were down to the barest of bones.

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to agree with Mendax, and I believe PL is a terrible manager and should have been sacked, I am a big fan of Glen Hoddle and let's see how he dose at QPR yes he said some stupid things in the past but most who played under his management all say he's great

Agree0 Disagree0

Mendax to be honest can not remember the last time you was positive on a post! My point was it may not be the strongest villa squad ever bit it's what we have this season and with Richardson cole injury free Sanchez eventually and with Hutton bent etc back it's not that bad let's get behind the boys and hope for great result on sat and see what negative posts we have then!!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree with you mendax I think before we all start sucking each other of just yet let's see if these buys an freebies get on. at the moment it is hard to raise spirits we have an ok at best team. there isn't any reason to start jumping for joy is there also that was mandex's thoughts no need to start slating yes we have to get behind our team true but its hard to when you see dire football week in week out. let's hope this season gives possitives instead of negitives utv
AVFC4LIFE

Agree0 Disagree0

It's been a long time since we have had decant players for every position, but on paper we are a lot stronger than the last 3-4 seasons, Mendex I'm speaking for myself here but I'm quite happy with the business we have done so far and lambert has said that he hopes to bring in 2 more along with the bomb squad I think we are a good mid table team, WHy don't we have a poll, those that think we are stronger that last season simple reply yes, those that we aren't simple reply no looking, forward to this

Agree0 Disagree0

I think the tension is getting to mendax, lighten up abit it was meant as joke.

Agree0 Disagree0

14 Aug 2014 17:17:48
players not guaranteed to play games like seasons gone by, players not preforming can be dropped plus we have game changers and players who have points to prove!
bring on the season and let the haters hate I for one am looking for realistic 10 - 15th finish which will be a improvement on last season and who knows we may even have a new owner come January!

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Villanick, I was responding to the guy before you in honesty
To the guy who says to "be honest can not remember the last time you was positive on a post". I tend to agree. I can't remember either. My issue is that you talk as though that's my fault.
Believe me mate, I don't choose to be so down about my team. It's not something I choose to do
I look at the situation fairly rationally rather than as a manic cheerleader
I've never, ever booed the team at a game so people telling me to "get behind the lads " is particularly galling. I don't need telling
I also don't need telling to come on here and give an honest view based on fact rather than baseless optimism.
Oh well, not long to go before it all starts and we see who is right. I HOPE IT IS YOU!

Hi Ed.
I have to ask you how you feel about the Tonev Loan.
Are you happy with it or not, I think he could develop given the chance but needs to curb his eagerness to score from distance.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - I'm not ecstatic over it because I don't like loan deals but I was disappointed when he chose Villa over us last summer, then I seen him a few times for you and I thought we had dodged a bullet. Hopefully he can find some form up here and get back to the player he was. I know what you mean about his long range shots :)

Ed. I didn't you was a celtic fan. I was speaking to a group of Celtic fans today in the bar. They was less than happy with the appointment of the new manger an signings etc. Do you feel the same aswell.? I know this is villa site. just wondering? Fordy.

Agree0 Disagree0

{Ed007's Note - He's got off to a bit of a sticky start but I'm willing to give him time. His modern outlook, coaching methods, scientific approach and playing philosophy is like a much needed breath of fresh air around the place for me. The whole club was in a rut with Neil Lennon at the helm so I was one of the ones happy to see Neil Lennon leave, it was best for the club and I think if Deila is given the chance and the board's backing we won't regret it.}

My starting 11 for stoke,
its a 3-5-1-1
gk guzan
rcb okore, cb vlaar, lcb clark
cdm Westwood, rcm gardener, lcm delph
rwb bacuna, lwb richardson
cam/number 10 nzogbia,
striker weiman.

subs/possible game changers grealish for nzogbia, bent/gabby/robinson for weiman

i know ill get some stick for having Clark in the team but I just can't stand senderos, looked average for arsenal and scraped by at Fulham before being shipped off, and my old school mate baker who some how got scouted for one good game of football will never be good enough for my beloved villa i'm afraid
Shawtvilla.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Average Senderous is at least a magnitude better than Clark!

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to disagree oldvillan, senderos is past his best and seems to have lost a few yards of pace and frequently loses his head in games, although I really hope he does come good for us this season, I would try cissokho over Clark at lcb as he has better pace, would worry about him just as much though, its tough to decide our defence as we only have two stand out defenders in vlaar and okore, i'd also love to see donacien come through at some point. Wonder what PL thinks of him?

Tonev supposively going Celtic on-loan hopefully will do him some good

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Why is it that all our unwanted players always go out on loan and are never sold to give us some money to spend?
It is blatantly obvious that Lambert has realised his mistake in signing Tonev and doesn't want him here any more so he is not going to get a chance when he returns from Celtic. They do apparantly have an option to buy after the loan deal expires so fingers crossed on that, but that's a year down the line and no use to us now. If Lambert is still looking for two more players, as he says, he is leaving it a bit late in the day to do any more business before the Stoke game. I'm wondering who he has in mind to bring in. Can't say the prospect fills me with eager anticipation, unless it IS Lionel Messi.

Starting XI vs Stoke

Guzan
Hutton Okore Senderos Vlaar Cissokho
Delph Westwood
Zog
Bent Weimann

Believable0 Unbelievable0

I'd go
Guzan
Hutton Okore Vlarr Cissokho Richardson
Delph Westwood
Bacuna N'Zogbia
Weimann

Agree0 Disagree0

I would have
Guzan
Okora. Vlaar. Senderos.
N'zogbia. Westwood. Cissokho.
Richardson. Cole.
Weiman.
Bent.

Pace, experience, youth, gile, and goals.
Made to counter attack, and hold on to the ball.
I seriously think this season we will be ok.
Top half, (10+. )
I think we will concede goals, but will score far more than we let in!

Up the villa

Nick

Agree0 Disagree0

GET real no Delph and Gardner might have the same sort of season as Delph last year, Liverpool fans can not believe we have Cissokho terrible buy

Agree0 Disagree0

Nick, why would you not play Delph and have Richardson further up the pitch than N'Zogbia

Agree0 Disagree0

I'd go

Vlaar senderos okore
Hutton. richardson

Delph. Westy. Grealish

zog

bent

Finch

Agree0 Disagree0

We would get hammered every week with that side Finch.
I think I would play Guzan as well mate.

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm only thinking no delph for stoke, as there power and height, a quick counter attacking side would be better.
I love delph, but he holds on to ball to long at times, quick feet, passing and movement will beat stoke.
I wouldn't plan on n'zogbia always in front, or behind Richardson, I would like them to be fluid and able to switch

Nick

Agree0 Disagree0

Nick, sorry but you're just wrong, Delph is our best player by far he needs to play every minute of every game

Agree0 Disagree0

Oh yea I forgot about the guz, Cheers dave!
I certainly think grealish could be our significant player this season though, judging from pre season it looks like he will get game time too

Finch

Agree0 Disagree0

Not a prob mate!
And I agree he is our best player! Just picked a formation I thought to win game!
Refreshing though that all if a sudden we have a squad where we can discuss different players in different teams!
Never for one second do I think we will win league, but think we will be ok this year!

Agree0 Disagree0

I agree Used wisely and Grealish can become a real star.

Agree0 Disagree0

Would have to go:-
Guzan
Bacuna/lowton vlaar okore cissokho
Zog westwood delph Richardson
Grelish
Bent
4-4-1-1 formation.

If Villa signed Sanchez it would be

So Aly Cissokho, Kieran Richardson, Joe Cole and Phillipe Senderos have been signed this summer. This is the experience that we have all been asking for and it has eventually came, they might not be the best quality of players but they have the experience. When Lambert was speaking about the signing of Aly Cissokho he said that he wants to sign one or two more players this summer to strengthen the sqaud. The only position that we need is a couple more midfielders hopefully Lambert actually sees sense and signs a strong midfielder for once. If we get a good strong midfielder I think that we could sustain a top 10 finish this season.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Are you drunk? We are still a poor side. Other teams around us are strengthening like so we will be again fighting at the bottom with Burnley qpr and Leicester.

Agree0 Disagree0

Would love to agree with you Cjr but I'm afraid I can't
We are still a team with no flair and Benteke aside have little up front
None of Lambert's buys have addressed this and in the case of centre back we may have improved in numbers but we've declined in quality (pretty incredible when you think of Clark and Baker)
A long hard season awaits and I fear it will end in relegation
That is unless we get bought soon, Lambert gets sacked and the new man can repair the collective damage of Lerner and Lambert in January. A tall order and not really likely

Agree0 Disagree0

I have to agree with you Cjr.
You have made a couple of good points and I hold the same enthusiasm as you do at this moment in time.
I am confident that we will be a better side this year, as I have said before.
I also think we might make another signing, maybe a playmaker that that will add more creativity to the side.
And if you are drunk, you are probably on the same grog as me.

Agree0 Disagree0

Sorry villadave but agree with Mendax in everyway

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi villajk.
So you also think we will be relegated!
I agree we lack a bit of flair, that is why I think an AM will be signed.
But relegation no way, I am amazed at the negativity.

Agree0 Disagree0

Yeah. mendax was spot on for me. Fordy.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Mendax, you state that we have reduced the quality at the back since last year. What about Okores, know he was a last year buy but he will be like a new player? Even you and me would have improved from Clark and Baker, but I think that Baker will learn from Vlaar and Okores, and I don't dismiss Senderous until I see what he does for us. As for Clark, I don't see anything for him and if he showed any promise another club would nave been in for him by now. Overall I look forward to a far better season providing we don't get our usual run of carp that we seem to have every year. Also I expect to see PL remain at VP even if we get a new owner.

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi old villain
Okore is certainly an interesting one but unproven in this league.
I was at the game yesterday and I will admit that Senderos was better than I feared (that would not be difficult however)
The middle of the park and upfront were very, very poor
I really don't want to negative about the team I
love but I don't want to lie about them either.
I fear the worst this season but I hope you are ramming humble pie down my throat in sbout 9 months time

Agree0 Disagree0

Forgot to add that Okore was said to be in the top 10 of buys at the start of last season. He was looked at by several top prem. clubs but overlooked as he is only 6ft 1in.
By my level that's a giant!

Agree0 Disagree0

Looking at him yesterday when he came on, everything looked a bit frantic and last minute if you know what I mean.
Not qualities I particularly like in a defender but I'd need to see more of him to make a real judgement

Agree0 Disagree0

I thought exactly the same Mendax, he was very erratic at times.
I suppose he needs more game time.
Lets hope that is the case anyway!

Believable0 Unbelievable0

08 Aug 2014 22:48:55
Some may disagree but I am looking at a top half of the league in the coming season. PL has obviously been allowed to go his own route and give up on "young" development players. It clearly looks like we will have a strong back 3 with a couple of wing backs that can go in either direction. There are options up front with Big Ben back soon to be fit and we have several midfield options. What I dearly want is for PL to get us up the league and for him to stick two figures up to his detractors. He has never had a chance with Lerners instructions yet we are still in the prem. and looking upwards. C'mon guys only a week to go, let's now put it all away and move onwards and upwards to where AVFC should stand in English football.

I've been reading the comments on this forum for a while now. agreeing and disagreeing with many comments on here. aston villa has got a history behind the club and for many years been battling it out for mid table/ and to stay up. we all want to see villa play well win the big games and buy the world class players! It ain't happening. players like Sinclair would be great for villa. people remember when he lit up the prem for Swansea then got snapped up by man city! We should look at loaning or investing into players like;-
M Richards, S Sinclair, Anderson, D ba, J Evans, K Gibbs
Kolarov, G clichy etc list is endless of players that ain't world class, can't get regular 1st team for there club but would do a job for the villa. people will disagree with the players I've put but its a example of players we should look at rather than players from the 2nd tier of the French league etc

Believable0 Unbelievable0

M Richards, K Gibbs would be great and I agree totally

It seems momentum is gathering over the interest from Manchester United in Ron Vlaar.
I for one don't want to lose him but let's get real hear, if they do make an offer for him he will be gone for sure.
This might be the reason we are trying for Aly Cissokho as a replacement.
I know he is a FB but I believe he has played CB before and looked comfortable.
If this is the case let's hope that he can fit in, he can`t be any more of a liability than Baker or Clarke.

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Hi Villadave, did you see that Thomas Vermalen is going to Barcelona for a chin scratching £15 million?
If we use that as a barometer we should be in for a windfall of about £30 million quid
I don't actually think Vlaar is a good defender in the premiership as I think he struggles with the pace pace of it
The Spanish or Italian league would suit him down to the ground though
If we could get 20 million plus someone like Smalling or Jones as part of it, I think that would be a pretty good deal.
It's amazing what a good international tournament can do for peoples perception of a player, even those people that have been watching him for 2 years

Agree0 Disagree0

Hi Mendax, You make a very good point.
Having said that, I think if we had not had Vlaar on board last season we would have gone down.
Our defence is shocking.

he would

Agree0 Disagree0

I know it's hard to back lambert but let's face it the job as the villa manager particularly in the circumstances over the past couple of years has been mission impossible.
Don't get me wrong my opinion of lambert isn't of a high value as we don't have a fluid attacking style but when you put things into context of the teams we finished above and how much money they spent it's fair to say he hasn't done so bad. The bigger picture is why the club's in the doldrums.

lerner is in London meeting keith harris, probably to do with a new ceo, if not, its to do with takeover

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Is this the Kieth Harris the vent. with his hand up Orvilles backside? Rumours abound but nothing deffinate about a buyer in the pipeline and Lerner gives PL £10m to bolster the team. The old phrase " you pay peanuts you get m. " seems to fit the situation. We must hold on to Vlaar and play him with Okores and Senderous to keep the back line tight and there are enough others to look after the business of scoring. I am looking forward to a reasonable season and if we can avoid our normal run of crap performances at the run in we will finish in the middle of the prem.

so, the cat's out of the bag and lamberk does have 10 mill to waste on more luna's and tonevs! whatever, posters no more rubbish about defour it won't happen and was never going to last night at Walsall, gabby again looked like a player with little to offer I think this season may be his last, I hope its a good one, he's been a good loyal servant, unlike others more easily mentioned.

again, hutton, goal aside looked like the quality fullback we've craved, not knowing we already had one if Warnock had been kept, we may have been better balanced the last two years, playing hutton and Richardson as wing backs looks good, but rest need to do as well, I still think lamberk will be the first managerial sacking of the season, what do you all reckon?

Believable0 Unbelievable0

Nobody has ever been sacked for doing the job he was instructed to do. PL has done what was asked of him. Some of his buys were questionable but the players sent away came from Lerner as they were being paid way above Lerners intention. Lerner gave O, Neil loads of money and he offered some players golden handcuffs and PL is carrying the can. I don't know if PL can do the job but he should be given the chance if we can find a buyer. Lerner has strangled our club but used PL, s hands. At the last minute Lerner has granted £10m to buy players. What a liberty to put it into a well known phrase!!

Agree0 Disagree0

Well PL should get 1 half decent player in stead of 2/3 who can't cut it, he's only had 2 buys any good you can't blame Lerner for that PL is not good enough for ASTON VILLA

Okore > Baker
Senderos > Clark
Hutton > Lowton
Richardson > Bennett
N'Zogbia > Albrighton
Grealish > Tonev

Hopefully followed up by 3 signings in the next couple of weeks; rumoured to be Ki, Sinclair and a striker the squad is starting to shape nicely. Benteke and Kozak are expected to return earlier than expected and between them there is 25 goals if fully fit.

Hi Guys. This conspiracy theorist in me wants to ask, why no number 9 this term? Does DB getting the iconic 19 shirt mean he is well and truly in the future plans? Whilst the question about Bent is a little tongue-in-cheek, the lack of a number 9 is puzzling, don't you think?

Agree0 Disagree0

Okore Richardson Grealish the rest are same for same The return of Gary Gardner could be good if he stays fit

When has one of Mr. Lamberts pronouncements ever been wrong??
A bit of sarcasm coming out there - my apologies.

I would like to know who voted Scott Sinclair as a bad signing, he is exactly what we need

Believable0 Unbelievable0

To be honest, mate, it was me and I stand by my opinion - the man is hopeless, lazy and useless, not necessarily in that order.
I wouldn't touch him with a bargepole.

I agree clarrie. Scott sinclair is not going to bring anything to the table. Fordy

I know it's paper talk but I really think something is wrong here! How can we a club of our size even think about selling vlaar to a club like Southampton only to go looking through the washing basket at the wolves a club that was in league two last season! I have stood by lambert since he as been at the club but really think that if this happens I give up hope on the man and just pray that the beloved vp don't get walked all over and made into a forgotten club

Hi all,
I for one believe we need a good couple of players to come in as we looked atrocious this afternoon againist Groningen. I will try stay positive but if we don't improve it looks pretty bleak.
Villa stew

Believable0 Unbelievable0

We won't improve. We still have Lambert responsible for coaching, tactics and team selection
Don't even start me on Lerner
We are a mess

Agree0 Disagree0

I'm pleased to see that Lambert thinks that results aren't important at this stage and that we will be right for the Stoke game.
I wish I could agree with him as today was shocking.
I see the bookies have us as 6th favourites for relegation behind Burnley, Q. P. R. , Leicester, Wesr Brom and Crystal Palace. I think I would add West Ham and Southampton to that group, so I think we will be safe, though it would be nice for a change to be thinking of the top half of the league rather than the bottom. Does anyone think we might be on for one of the cups this season? As my father used to say, I have a feeling in my water.

I'd get that checked Clarrie.
I'm not a medical man but that sounds
like Cystitis

Agree0 Disagree0

Mendax, Thank you fir your medical diagnosis but I always thought only females got cystitis.
Not sure what the male equivalent is.
Clarrie.

Agree0 Disagree0

I think it's called wishful thinking mate

Agree0 Disagree0

Clarrie I can assure you that both sex's can get cystitis. Had a touch myself some time ago and was worried to death. However my wife said that I had always been an old women so it was no surprise.
As for the betting I am amazed that there are teams rated more likely to be relegated than our team.

Agree0 Disagree0

Oldvillan, Don't worry too much mate. I really do think there are a number of worse sides than us in the Premiership this season, hard as it might be to believe. I have actually predicted us to finish eighth this season and I really do think we can achieve that.
Clarrie.

I bow to your greater knowledge on the subject my dear sir.

Luna on his way, Sylvia gone to Turkey.
with a bit of luck a few more might depart soon. Interesting point though, how come other clubs can see something in these players when they have failed to perform at VP?

Agree0 Disagree0

Oldvillan you missed KEA /what did we see in those players

Agree0 Disagree0

"We" didn't see anything. We watched them 2-3 times and it was clear they were not in anyway good enough
What Lambert saw is anyones guess

Agree0 Disagree0

True its a bit like what has he seen in sendross

Last year he didn't use them just through them on I still don't think he is gona buy these players if he does what formation is he going to use last years formation was awful u only have to look at the world cup rooney on da wing to prove it dnt work gabby an weimann couldn't score goals in that formation.

We need to make some comment on here after the news that "Olly" Mellberg has announced his retirement from all football. A great servant for Aston Villa when he was at VP. Probably get in the team now
