Liverpool are set to make a move for shay given as cover for simon mignolet. My guess is they'll just be using him as an experienced head to give a few pointers and somebody that can step in should anything happen and from given's point of view it will no doubt be an ideal way to see out his career, a bit like marshall did with us.

ethAVFC

1.) Listening to Shay on radio last week he said he wanted to play first team footy for the last couple years of his career, so I don't think he'd go there to be a No2

>scg87

2.) They didn't want to keep Reina because of his wages and i'm guessing he couldn't have been on much more than Given is now.

3.) Reina was on £110,000 a week, and their hoping Given takes a drop on his current £60,000 a week. just like he did when he joined us from the £80,000 Man City. now all you parents out there with young kids learn them goal keeping skills, it pays!

4.) Fair point, I don't think it was about the wages with reina, I just think they realised he's past it and used and excuse else they'd have to get rid of half their team. And tbh surely given would just be happy with a move of any kind now! Anyway this is just something i've heard last night and its been reported a few places now so we'll see what happens with it. I'm not going to throw and dates and fees around like kingvilla since its just rumoured interest.

5.) I'd rather be number 2 there than number 3 with us

Some reports than we have opened talks to sign tom ince. Everton also rumoured to be interested. Unclear how true at the moment and I personally doubt we'd pay the askinh price but in my opinion would be a good addition, could play behind benteke or on the wing and then weimann or tonev could slot in behind benteke (both capable of playing that roll).

ethAVFC

1.) We could give them bannan and some other wantaways.

2.) Simple solution, straight swap, ince for weimann lol

3.) And keep bannan and play ireland in the a/m role?

4.) Why would you get rid of weiman
Hes class
Thickle villa fans

5.) Define class please mate

6.) Class = someone who scores goal when played up front!

7.) Saw his goal last night! Quality!

8.) Said this before but I think weimann should play in behind the striker. Gabby is capable of dropping back as a right midfield as he's strong and can win the ball back, but also has the pace to keep up with the attacking play and as we saw last night he can cross too. Weimann is never a winger, he can't cross! But he can put some nice passes in behind the defence and can certainly shoot. All we need then is another right midfield (like albrighton but better) and we can play 4-4-1-1. We get tore up down the right hand side because weimann isn't quick enough to be goal side when defending and the 3 midfielders are usually too central.

9.) Could we be talking about Gabby as playing a similar role to Bale? He has pace to go past defenders and can shoot but he isn't really a through ball player. He does appear to be playing the Bale role already this season. Before someone jumps up and says "dont be silly" look at Gabby, he has some desire back and looks fitter than he has for a couple of season.

Here's one for those still moaning for whatever reason. We have had the hardest run of games out of any team in the league. The average league position of the teams we've played is 6. 5, compared to that of man city in second (7. 38) and cardiff in 3rd (8. 25). Despite this we still have more points than at this point last season, have conceded less goals and already have 2 clean sheets, compared to the 5 we got all season last year. Bare in mind we played 3 games without benteke, there is clearly improvement. Tell me seriously, was anybody expecting to beat spurs WITH benteke, let alone without? If you were you're dillusional and tainted by the fact we beat arsenal and man city. If we looked at the games at the start of the season we'd expected nothing from arsenal, man city, spurs or liverpool. Hull have conceded one goal in about 450 minutes of football so we can't be too downhearted by that so the only real disappointment this season is newcastle, a team that we lost to at home last season anyway?

Nobody seemed to be moaning and tipping us for relegation before the spurs game so please tell me, why is everybody so upset that we lost to a team we have only beaten at home once in 13 attempts?

Honestly guys i'm not trying to be rude but please compare the results against the teams we've played to those last season and that in itself shows improvement everywhere but at home to the geordies. Calm down will you!

ethAVFC

1.) Thankyou stato!

I think wev every reason to be cheerful with start made this season. With a good run of more 'winnable' games coming up we'll climb the table.

Finch

2.) Completly agree, I do think. Lot of people are going over the top about villas season so far. I still believe we all think were still in the martin o Neil eara when we expected to win every game but since then randy has picked up two awful mangers which has put us in the position we are now with not as much money as teams like hull April and Southampton who are championship or recent to premier league. But I agree with everything lambert is doing to try and get villa back into a good state on the field and financially
AVFCLEGEND

3.) Hi ethAVFC
I generally agree with a lot of what you say. That said, it does confuse me when you seem to be saying that as we haven't beaten them in 13 games, fans shouldn't be upset that we lost, again, to Tottenham, at home. I would think that would be a reasonable attitude to take for any club that has ambitions no greater than finishing around mid table. We have to be realistic of course, but I think we are in danger of developing a real inferiority complex.
Anyway, the most important game is the next one. Let's talk again after it?

Right then since we've got a bit of a break from club football I think its time to step back and take a look at the start of the season.

After 7 games we're sitting in the top half of the table and yes I know its only 7 games and i'm not getting carried away, but we weren't it the top half of the table once last season. I'm just curious as to whether those that said during pre-season 'if we can't beat a german league 2 side we'll be in another relegation battle' still think we are no better off than last season and still think we are candidates for the drop? Its clear for everybody with an eye on football to see that we've improved, how much we've improved is down to opinion but the fact is this season is already showing real improvement.

Its not just improvement over the summer though, in 2013, we are 8th in the premier league table. Some people are still being negative and I really don't get it. I get the feeling that they are still living in the MON times an expect to win every weekend. Anyway say what you will but the rate of improvement we are achieving under lambert is ridiculously good considering. And i'm fairly certain most of the teams in the league will fear us by the end of the season. For the fickle fans amogst us i'd just like to point out that many of us tried telling you lambert was the right guy for the job and you just wouldn't have it, are you eating your words now?

P. s. Quite a few places gave clark the highest rating of any centre back in europe last weekend, is he drinking from the same cup as ramsey, or does that mirror the improvement the whole team has made?

We may have had a lucky break against man city yeterday but isn't it time something went out way? For the last year we've been losing games out of bad decisions (chelsea this season for example) and lucky teams (man utd at home for example)

Anyway here are a few stats for those doomboys who find something to complain about after beating the bookies title favourites.

It took us until the first week in november to get as many points we have now, and we have arguable had more difficult games.

Only 2 teams have scored more goals than us this season (arsenal and man city)

And finally, without sylla in the team we have picked up 3 out of a possible 21 points, where as with him in the team we have 27 from a possible 39. He doesn't do a lot to get on match of the day, but he does have an impact on the team in more ways than people realise. I did the maths on this last night and unless I did it wrong, we average 2 points a game with him, and just under 0. 5 points a game without him! I hope lambert sees that stat.

ethAVFC

1.) I'm not one for reading too much into the stats but I am absolutely with you on the sentiment of not being upset at winning a game luckily
We have lost out in the past (albeit not that often of late) and we are constantly told that these things even themselves out
We just got even. Let's not be embarrassed about it.

2.) Hi ethAVFC what's Sylla stats this season?Westwood was great last yr not so good this yr i'm not a doom boy, but iwould like my team Villa to play good football, I know we compete and work, but its not enough for me to get excited about (sorry)

3.) I know what you mean about stats, like I said on the other thread I don't care what player has had the most touches of the ball closest to the oppositions left corner flag against teams in london, I only care about whi scored the most goals. The only reason I mentioned these stats is because they clearly show our improvement (for those who doubted it) and also the impact I believe sylla has had since joining last january. I do feel sorry for those of us who can't just enjoy it when we beat teams like man city!

4.) Regarding sylla's stats this season, please forgive me if i'm wrong, but sylla has only actually started one game from what I can recall, and we won. Also personally I could not give half of a stuff how we win if we are winning, I got sick to death with us always getting patted on the back because we played well and lost last season, and we still finished the season with nothing to show for it and flirted with relegation all too often! So tell me, would you rather play well and lose, but think oh yeah well done good effort unlucky, and still be around the relegation zone, or play not so well (only happening at home) and still be in the top half of the table? I know which i'd want!

5.) Hi that's what I like about this site we all have opinions I myself would love villa to play like arsenal, also they use there young players I mean young not ( 24) we must have some good academy players give then a chance

6.) Yep I agree with you, just not a fan of people complaining at how we beat the best collection of players in the country! Would like to see some academy lads given a go but its too much of a risk for us, we need to improve a bit first to make room for trying new players, at minute we kind of need to go by the 'dont fix what isn't broken' motto!

7.) So luna, tonev, helinus bacuna, are all prem experience?kea would not make my bench use the academy

8.) One thing I like about us this season is the energy we play with and lamberts squad selection ie not being afraid to drop lowton for bacuna.
I do think we will have more chance of beating the big boys at home as there expected to bring the game to us which suits our style. Against the lesser teams I'm hoping for either a helenius or tonev to step up to the plate but the jury's still out on them.

Always believe in lambert.
Finch

9.) Admittedly none of the players we have signed this summer have 'prem experience' but they have a whole lot more experience than 17 year olds who have played against 17 year olds. All but one are in their respective national squads and all have been mixing it with the big boys so to speak for some years now, even the youngest, okore, has been a first team player for 2 years before moving to us. Why do you think our youth players get sent out on loan? If a player has only ever played against kids the same size as them, they'll get destroyed in the prem!

10.) YES like Rooney Barkley the new Manchester United kid, wba new lad, I could go on, if you are good enough you are old enough most of arsenal team

Predictions for today then lads?

I know everybody is being negative on here this week, but the way the premier league is now, it massively favours the away teams that counter attack, hence why we looked a lot more threatening against arsenal and chelsea than against liverpool and newcastle. As much as it does annoy me, it looks like we could have a very good season on the road, and a very poor one at home.

With this in mind my prediction for today is a 2-1 villa win, however I do think that if we don't improve at home by the time they visit they can beat us at villa park.

Also while i'm posting i'd just like to do what a few others have and say my favoured line up. 4-4-2 diamond

Guzan
Lowton vlaar baker luna
Sylla
Tonev delph
Weimann
Benteke agbonlahor

ethAVFC

1.) Fantastic 3 points and clean sheet we been wanting, well done the team now totenham and city at home, let's take this in to those games at home!

I know some of us will be moaning we still don't have a creative attacking midfielder, but let's just calm down. We have properly strengthened the squad now, there is competition for places and there will be no complacency from anybody. Not only that but it also means we won't be playing awful players just because we have to (e. g. Barry bannan for 4 months last season)!

If we hold on to everybody but benteke we really don't have to strengthen that much next season other than a replacement (unless helenius or kozák can fill his shoes) and then the all important CAM! And/or a tough DCM We survived last season and played really well close to the end, and now we have improved the squad.

Okay we're not going to be in europe next season but good things come to those who wait and if i'm honest i'd rather sign 7 players to improve the squad than one or two big names.

We might see somebody come in in january but if not, don't worry. We will be fine this season, and anybody expecting us to sign 15 players and be challenging for europe is silly, its a massive work in progress and we are definitely going in the right direction. I might be alone here but I for one am very happy with the transfer activity this summer and in lambert I most certainly trust! UTV

ethAVFC

1.) Great window guys you look at least top ten this year especially if your new striker produces

derbyshire dave

2.) Nope you not alone I also think we have done well to move dead wood and bring international players!

Oh wow he once megged a player in the prem let's start him every week. Ask an MK Dons fan if he's any good 'mate'

We are all talking about grealish, that's the 18 year old grealish. Gardner probably would be near the team, but he's 21 so the point is invalid

Well we don't have a wilshire, barkley or januzaj on our hands, we have a gabby, a townsend so on and so forth, if you can name on one hand the teenagers playing in the premier league than that says it all, carruthers and gardner have both been given first team action and it was clear they weren't ready so I say again, let's give the young lads a bit of time to play some football before sticking them in with the big boys to get bullied every week

ethAVFC

Lets not put too much pressure on these lads, too many people are expecting them all to play at the age of 18 and be villa's answer to messi, yes some of them will be good premier league players but let's give them a bit of time to develop their game first.

Dont get me wrong i'm not saying he's a very good player, but he brings more to the team than westwood, and you can't drop a player who hasn't played badly

I didn't say KEA was a good player? I simply stated the fact that he is inside the top 5 of a lot of statistics tables. I should know, since I spend most of my time checking statistics and studying football.

Kea and delph are in the top 5 of EVERY important midfielder stat, I won't bore you with them. Not only this but like i've said on this page, before this weekend delph had the highest average rating of any english player (joint first with sturridge)

Are you smoking something? You'd rather play yeovil and blues than get the buzz of beating arsenal and man city? You'd rather see villa park 1/4 full instead of almost full every week? You have well and truly lost the plot.

We have played 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th in the table, and have more points than last season already, and yet you still find reason to moan when we lose to spurs? Have a day off, bet none of the negative people on this site were tipping us for relegation after the man city game? Part time fans worry me at times! Clueless.
